Blasphemy against God's Word is a grave offense that incurs severe consequences. The Bible unequivocally condemns those who revile, mock, or deny the authority of Scripture. In this sermon, we will explore the biblical perspective on blasphemy against God's Word and examine few examples that illustrate the severity of this sin.
The Definition of Blasphemy
Blasphemy is defined as the act of speaking or acting in a way that shows contempt or disrespect for God or sacred things. In the context of Scripture, blasphemy refers specifically to the reviling or mocking of God's Word.
The Consequences of Blasphemy
The Bible warns that those who blaspheme against God's Word will face severe consequences. Psalm 139:20-21 states, "They speak against you wickedly, and your adversaries misuse your name. Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord, and abhor those who are in opposition to you?"
Biblical Examples of Blasphemy Against God's Word
The Pharisees' Blasphemy (Matthew 12:22-32): When the Pharisees attributed Jesus' miracles to the power of Satan, Jesus condemned their actions as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
The Blasphemy of the High Priest (Matthew 26:57-68): During Jesus' trial, the high priest Caiaphas tore his robes and accused Jesus of blasphemy for claiming to be the Son of God.
The Blasphemy of the Israelites (Numbers 21:5-6): When the Israelites spoke against God and Moses, saying, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?" God sent fiery serpents among them as punishment.
The Blasphemy of Sennacherib (2 Kings 18:28-37, 2 Chronicles 32:9-19): When the Assyrian king Sennacherib blasphemed against God, saying, "Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their lands out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?" God sent an angel to destroy the Assyrian army.
The Blasphemy of the Antichrist (1 John 2:22, 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4): The Antichrist will blaspheme against God, denying the Father and the Son, and exalting himself above all that is called God.
The Blasphemy of the Wicked (Psalm 10:3-4, 11-13): The wicked blaspheme against God, saying, "God has forgotten; he hides his face; he will never see it." But God will punish the wicked for their blasphemy.
The Blasphemy of the False Prophets (Deuteronomy 13:1-5, 18:20): False prophets who speak in the name of other gods or who contradict God's Word will be punished for their blasphemy.
Conclusion
Blasphemy against God's Word is a serious offense that incurs severe consequences. The Bible warns that those who revile, mock, or deny the authority of Scripture will face God's judgment. As believers, we must reverence God's Word and avoid any behavior that could be construed as blasphemy.
