The Government Shall Be Upon His Shoulder
Isaiah 9:6
Intro: This is the passage prophesying of the coming of the Lord in fleshly form the first time. He states that a child will be born and a son will be given. “A child is born” tells us of Christ humanity upon this earth. “A son is given” tells us of his divinity on the earth. A Son was not born, for he always was. “And the government shall be upon his shoulder” tells of the way God would deal with people through the son. The Law was the government of God prior to the human advent of Christ, but upon the shoulder of the Savior would be the new government of God. What was upon his shoulder, but the cross! The government of God is now operated in this day under the authority and precepts of Calvary. I had sinned and offended the Lord, but Christ took my offense in himself on the tree and imparted his righteousness unto me. Now, I stand before the high court of God hidden behind the cross. The government borne on the back of the Savior gives mercy to my soul. Thank God for the Cross!!!! The Cross is Precious for:
I. It Bruised the Savior: Isaiah 53:5, “He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed.” Isaiah 53:10 “It pleased the Lord to bruise him, he hath put him to grief.”
II. It Bought the Sinner: just like Hosea and Gomer (The prophecy of Hosea 3:1-5), he bought me off the auction block!
III. It Brought Salvation: Sin did reign in my life as in all lives. God did not make me quit sinning, but he saved me from the bondage of that sin. To be saved is to be rescued, recovered, redeemed, delivered, preserved, and protected. I have been delivered from the bondage of sin and death. Sin did abound, but grace did much more abound! (Romans 5:20)
IV. It Began the Journey to the Sepulcher: This is our victory!
His government begins at Calvary. It begins with grace and ends in victory. Will you throw yourself on the mercy of his governmental jurisdiction? Plead guilty before the court, today; his government will abound over sin on your behalf!
