THE GOD WHO SHIELDS FROM DANGER
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: Psalm 91:1-7 (KJV)– “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.”
Supporting Texts: Proverbs 18:10; Psalm 3:3; Isaiah 54:17; Exodus 14:13-14; 2 Thessalonians 3:3
INTRODUCTION:
Every day, we live in a world full of uncertainties and hidden dangers. From accidents and natural disasters to spiritual attacks and unseen plots of the enemy, the threats to our lives are countless. Yet, as believers, we are assured of a divine shield that surrounds us when we put our trust in God.
God’s Word repeatedly describes Him as a refuge, a fortress, and a strong tower. This imagery shows us that His protection is not partial or temporary—it is powerful and complete. His shield is not like a human defence that can fail; it is an unbreakable covering that guards both our physical and spiritual well-being.
Understanding God as your shield gives you confidence to walk boldly, even in dangerous circumstances. When you rest in His presence and obey His instructions, no weapon formed against you can prosper. He has promised that even if thousands fall around you, harm will not come near your dwelling.
1. GOD IS OUR DIVINE REFUGE AND FORTRESS
God provides a place of absolute safety for His children, far beyond what human effort can achieve.
a) God’s protection is unmatched (Proverbs 18:10)
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; when you run into it, you are secure from every form of harm.
b) He shields us from both seen and unseen threats (Psalm 121:7-8)
Many dangers you never notice are already neutralised by God’s invisible hand of protection.
c) God’s refuge is constant and unfailing (Hebrews 13:5-6)
Unlike earthly safeguards that fail, His covering remains unshaken in all seasons of life.
d) His Word is our shield and buckler (Psalm 91:4)
As you declare and stand on God’s Word, you activate His shield over your life.
Biblical Example: Noah and his family were shielded from the flood’s destruction inside the ark while the world perished (Genesis 7:1-7).
2. GOD DELIVERS FROM THE SNARES OF THE ENEMY
The enemy continually lays traps, but God is faithful to deliver His children.
a) God exposes and destroys evil plots (Psalm 124:7)
He breaks every snare set against your destiny and ensures your escape.
b) He shields you from spiritual attacks (Ephesians 6:16)
The shield of faith quenches all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
c) God frustrates the plans of the wicked (Job 5:12)
Even when enemies conspire in secret, their schemes cannot succeed against you.
d) He guards your steps to prevent hidden dangers (Psalm 37:23-24)
The Lord establishes your path so you do not stumble into destruction.
Biblical Example: Daniel was delivered from the lions’ den because God’s invisible shield shut the mouths of the lions (Daniel 6:22).
3. GOD PROTECTS IN TIMES OF TROUBLE AND WAR
God’s presence surrounds you like a wall of fire even in the midst of chaos.
a) God fights battles on your behalf (Exodus 14:13-14)
He shields you while waging war against your enemies.
b) His angels encamp around you (Psalm 34:7)
He sends heavenly hosts to protect you wherever you go.
c) God preserves you in dangerous environments (Isaiah 43:2)
Even in fire or flood, His shield ensures your survival and victory.
d) The Lord gives peace amidst storms (Mark 4:39-41)
God’s protection includes calming the storms that threaten your life.
Biblical Example: The Israelites were shielded by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night as they journeyed through the wilderness (Exodus 13:21-22).
4. GOD’S SHIELD IS ACTIVATED BY TRUST AND OBEDIENCE
God’s promises of protection are experienced when we align our lives with His Word.
a) Trust invites God’s covering (Psalm 28:7)
When you fully depend on Him, He becomes your strength and shield.
b) Obedience keeps you under God’s canopy (Deuteronomy 28:1-2)
Walking in His will ensures you remain within the zone of His protection.
c) Prayer builds a hedge of divine security (Job 1:10)
