The Glamour of Christmas

Luke 2:1-20

I remember growing up as a young child the excitement surrounding Christmas Day. There was flashing of lights all over the city, the erecting and decorating of trees and the anticipation of the receiving of gifts.

Today these things surrounds perhaps the most celebrated time of the year and even today I still enjoy the viewing of these things.

When we consider “The Glamour of Christmas” there is real meaning that surround the commercial practices today.

1. The True Light

While almost everything appears to be decorated with Christmas lights we should take the time to reflect upon the true light that came into the world.

See: John 1:6-10

Mention: John 8:12 Jesus says “I am the light of the world”

The world despite all the lights that may have shined in the 1st century was still a very dark place when we consider the spirituality of mankind. God sent into the world a Light that would penetrated the dark souls of man.

See: Luke 2:32 Simeon says He would be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

While you are admiring the Christmas lights this year pause and reflect upon the True Light that came into this world.

2. The Tree

One of my favorite things is the decorating of the Christmas tree in which I still enjoy today. There have been some who has created some controversy about the Christmas tree as being an idol. I am certain that this traditional practice today is not idolatry because no one is worshipping the tree.

I would like to reflect upon a tree that was used to crucify our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Somewhere in the Middle East there grew a tree under the Father’s care that would be used as a cross to bear the body of His only begotten Son.

Mention: Isaiah 53:10 It pleased the LORD to bruise Him…

I cannot help to think about the shame and mockery He had to endure as He hung naked before those who had Him crucified and those who loved Him so much.

Mention: Luke 2:35 Simeon tells Mary of this event prophetically when he says to her “a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also”

I think of the mockery He would face as He hung on that tree and the passage of scripture that impacts my heart the most is…

Matt. 27:40-42 They said if thou be the Son of God, come down from that cross…

I am so glad He did not do as they requested because by doing so would have left us all in a helpless state.

Matt. 27:42 They would sure get part of this verse right in their mockery “He saved others”, but He could have saved Himself but He did not because the world was on His mind.

1 Tim. 2:6 Paul tells Timothy that on that day in history Christ became a ransom for all

1 John 2:2 John tells us He became the propitiation of our (believers) sins; and not our only, but also for the sin of the whole world.

When you admire the decorated tree this year reflect of that tree that our Savoir hung on for the sins of the world.

3. The Gifts

Probably the favorite part of Christmas at least for children and many adults is the giving and receiving of gifts.

I know there are many things people would imagine in their hearts to be the idea gift around this time of the year, but let not forget that Christmas is about God giving us all the greatest gift one could receive.

2 Cor. 9:15 Thank be unto God for His unspeakable gift.

Obviously Paul is speaking concerning eternal life so before you receive or give gifts this year have you thank the LORD for the gift of everlasting life He has given you. Perhaps you haven’t received God’s gift and this would be such a wonderful time to accept His Son has you Lord and Savior.

If you celebrate Christmas all your life and never unwrap its meaning you would have celebrated in vain because it is here where the real “Glamour of Christmas” rest.
