Summary: The gift of interpretation of tongues is the least gift of all the utterance gifts because it has to depend upon another gift in order for it to operate. It cannot function unless the gift of tongues has been in operation.

The main purpose of this gift is to make the gift of tongues understandable to the hearer, so that the church will be edified (built up).

1 Cor. 14:12 - Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are to be used to bring edification, comfort and encouragement to the body of Christ. They are not to be used to bring glory and honor to those bringing forth the message or manifestation of the gift. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not "our ministries", but they are the ministries of the Holy Spirit.

Another purpose of the gift of interpretation of tongues is to lay the groundwork and set the theme for the service and the ministry of the word.

I’ve been in many services when a prophetic word had been given, and as a result of that word, the Lord changed the whole direction of the service. Instead of the minister continuing on with his plan (sermon), he was liberated enough by the Holy Spirit to be obedient to what God wanted Him to do. Because of his obedience and flexibility, the Lord was able to move mightily through this minister and the people of God were greatly blessed.

I cannot stress how important it is for Christians to learn how to be sensitive to the moving of the Holy Spirit. I believe our sensitivity level grows and matures when we spend quality time in His presence communing with Him on a daily basis. When our sensitivity level increases, we won’t be afraid to go with the flow of God’s program if He directs us to do something different than what was already planned. We won’t be frustrated when this kind of thing happens, but instead we will be pleased knowing that God has a specific plan for that specific group of people.

We have much to learn regarding the gifts of the Holy Spirit. My prayer is that we will continue to ask the Lord to use us and allow the gifts of His Spirit to flow through us in powerful ways always bringing glory and honor to Him. The church needs to remember that it’s all about Jesus, not about us.
