The gift of discernment, in a spiritual context, refers to the ability to perceive and understand spiritual truths and realities. It involves the capacity to distinguish between what is of God and what is not, to recognise the presence of good and evil, and to make wise and sound judgements in spiritual matters.
A key scriptural reference related to the gift of discernment is found in the New Testament in the book of 1 Corinthians 12:10 , where it is mentioned as one of the spiritual gifts: "to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues."
In addition to 1 Corinthians 12:10, the Bible contains various passages that emphasise the importance of discernment in the Christian life, encouraging believers to test the spirits and to be vigilant in discerning the will of God. Examples include 1 John 4:1-3 and Hebrews 5:14.
