Summary: Each time Christ speaks its for us

THE FOURTH SAYING FROM THE CROSS WHY

Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

The Master is forsaken so we can be forgiven

(1) The heavy weight of sin ours

Isaiah 53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

The crown of thorns on his blessed head

The stripes on his bleeding back

The heavy cross on his shoulders

(2) The final hour of his suffering

Matthew 26:45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

John 17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

All past waited for this hour

All types and shadows gives way

All heaven and earth watch and wait in holy silence

(3) The finished hallowed work was now at stake

Matthew 26:45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

The Lamb slain never to repeat

The blood was shed for all eternity

The word was satisfied from old to new

(4) Our future and hope depended on this sacrifice

Hebrews 9:25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Doubt turned in to victory

Disease of sin healed

Death defeated

(5) Heaven and earth watched the fight with shock

Hebrews 12:3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

12:4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

Each round was decisively won

All means of power must be taken from Satan

Christ must have complete rule

(6) Christ strikes the fatal wound to Satan

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Last battle with the Devil

God demanded victory

All human life at stake

(7)Faith will be honored when placed in Jesus Christ our Saviour

John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

You are totally justified at conversion

Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

You are made a new creature

2nd Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Now you are a joint heir with Christ

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
