THE FOOLISH FARMER

Luke 12;20

INTRO: We all know the story of the foolish farmer, but sometimes we forget the real meaning of the story. Just what did the foolish farmer really do when he considered only himself?

I. WHILE THINKING OF THE GIFTS HE FORGOT THE GIVER.

A. Ingratitude.

1. My goods.

2. Do we sometimes say the same?

B. Property is only lent to us.

1. We are God’s stewards.

2. Dependent creatures.

C. James 1:17. "Every good gift and every perfect gift."

II. WHILE THINKING OF HIMSELF HE FORGOT HIS NEIGHBOR.

A. "soul, thou hast," etc. "Take thine ease."

B. Hoarding up is not wise.

C. It is not quantity that makes happiness.

III. WHILE THINKING OF HIS BODY HE FORGOT HIS SOUL.

A. Only made provision for his physical needs.

B. Property will not sustain life or prolong it.

C. The soul can be satisfied with. nothing short of God.

IV. WHILE THINKING OF THIS LIFE, HE FORGOT HIS MORTALITY.

A. Death may come at any moment.

B. Strange that men make no provision for eternity when they are so

careful about insuring their property, and providing against

loss and injury.

C. The good man commits his soul to God.

D. The bad man’s soul is required of him.
