Summary: Numbers 27, where the story of Joshua and Moses unfolds—a tale of succession, guidance, and the power of touch.

Title: "The Faithful Shepherd and the Power of Touch"

Introduction:

Greetings, beloved congregation. Today, we delve into Numbers 27, where the story of Joshua and Moses unfolds—a tale of succession, guidance, and the power of touch. As we reflect on this biblical account, we can draw parallels to our current world situation and explore the significance of touch in our lives. In this sermon, we will also highlight the role of the Holy Spirit and the importance of being shepherds to one another.

Scripture Reading: Numbers 27:12-23 (NIV)

I. The Passing of the Mantle:

In Numbers 27, Moses, the faithful servant of God, is informed by the Lord that he will not enter the Promised Land. Moses seeks guidance for his successor, and God appoints Joshua to lead the Israelites into their inheritance. Moses displays humility, acknowledging that the Lord is the God of the spirits of all people and requests that a leader be appointed, so they may not be like sheep without a shepherd.

II. The Power of Touch:

During this transition, Moses is instructed to "lay his hands" on Joshua (Numbers 27:18). But what does "putting hands on" mean? While it may have similarities to the physical act of putting a hand on someone's shoulder during prayer, it goes beyond mere physical contact. In biblical context, "putting hands on" carries a deeper significance—it symbolizes a transfer of authority, blessing, and empowerment. It represents the passing on of an anointing, as seen in the Old Testament rituals when priests and leaders were ordained.

Touch is a fundamental human need that extends beyond the physical realm. Psychologically and biologically, touch has been shown to promote healing, comfort, and emotional well-being. When we extend our hands in prayer over missionaries, lay hands on someone in need, or embrace one another, we convey love, support, and the power of the Holy Spirit flowing through us.

III. The Role of Shepherds:

In this passage, Moses recognized the need for a shepherd to lead God's people. Likewise, today we have shepherds in our lives who guide, nurture, and care for us. These shepherds can be our pastors, mentors, parents, or friends who walk alongside us in our faith journey. They embody the qualities of a good shepherd, selflessly tending to the flock, providing protection, and leading with wisdom and love.

As we navigate the challenges of our current world situation, we must also embrace our role as shepherds to one another. We are called to extend a helping hand, offer a listening ear, and provide comfort and support to those in need. Through our actions, we reflect the character of Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to work through us.

IV. The Holy Spirit at Work:

Throughout this passage, we witness the Holy Spirit at work. Joshua receives the Spirit of wisdom as Moses lays his hands upon him, enabling him to lead with strength and courage. Today, we have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, empowering and equipping us for the tasks God has set before us.

Conclusion:

In Numbers 27, we find a story of succession, touch, and the need for shepherds in our lives. As we reflect on this passage and its relevance to our current world situation, let us embrace the power of touch, both physically and spiritually. Let us be shepherds to one another, guiding and supporting our brothers and sisters in Christ. May we rely on the Holy Spirit to empower us and grant us the wisdom to fulfill our roles as faithful servants of God.
