Sermons

Summary: In this sermon, we will explore some of the devices Satan uses to lead people astray and how we can defend ourselves against them.

As Christians, we are engaged in a spiritual battle against the forces of darkness. The apostle Paul warned us about the schemes of Satan, stating, "lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices" (2 Corinthians 2:11). In this sermon, we will explore some of the devices Satan uses to lead people astray and how we can defend ourselves against them.

Device 1: Blinding Minds to the Truth

Satan blinds people's minds to spiritual reality, often through false doctrines like atheism, evolution, and humanism (2 Corinthians 4:3-4). These false ideologies hinder people from receiving the truth. Our defense against this device is to engage in discussions and debates armed with truth, adopting Christ-like attitudes such as meekness and gentleness (2 Corinthians 10:1-4).

Device 2: Getting People Hooked on Worldly Desires

Satan tempts people through the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life (1 John 2:15-17). This device was used against Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:6) and against Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). Our defense is to saturate ourselves with the Word of God and develop a strong love for the Father, which is incompatible with loving the world (1 John 2:15).

Device 3: Persecuting Those Who Try to Do Right

Satan persecutes Christians through afflictions and social pressures, tempting them to give up (1 Peter 5:8-9). Our defense is to encourage one another, rejoice in trials, and commit ourselves to God in doing good (James 1:2-4; 1 Peter 4:19).

Device 4: Getting People to Enjoy Evil Company

Satan uses wrong companions to hinder spiritual growth (1 Corinthians 15:33). Our defense is to realize the danger of bad company and heed biblical advice to separate from unbelievers and pursue holiness (2 Corinthians 6:14-16).

Device 5: Discouraging People Through UnChrist-like Christians

Satan discourages people through unloving, unmerciful, and unforgiving behavior among Christians (2 Corinthians 2:6-11). Our defense is to place our ultimate faith in the Lord, not in brethren, and imitate good examples while not being discouraged by bad ones (2 Timothy 4:16-18).

Conclusion

In conclusion, understanding the devices of Satan is crucial in our spiritual journey. By being aware of these tactics, we can defend ourselves against them and stand firm in our faith. As the apostle Paul exhorts us, "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11). Let us be diligent and strong in the Lord, equipped with the truth, righteousness, and power of God.
