INTRODUCTION:
The story of Joshua commanding the sun and moon to stand still is one of the most astonishing demonstrations of faith and divine power in Scripture. It reveals that when a man’s faith is in harmony with God’s purpose, even the laws of nature can be suspended to bring victory.
This miracle was not about human pride or ambition but about fulfilling divine purpose. Joshua understood that the victory of Israel was God’s will, and he boldly declared what was needed to complete that victory. His faith spoke words that changed the order of creation because those words were born from divine alignment.
This passage challenges every believer to rise above natural limitations and walk in the authority of faith. When your faith agrees with God’s will, heaven backs your words with power, and the impossible becomes possible.
1. FAITH IS BORN OUT OF DIVINE ALIGNMENT
Faith that moves mountains and commands creation is not self-willed but God-inspired. True faith is birthed from a heart that aligns with the will and purpose of God.
a) Faith begins with knowing God’s will (Romans 10:17)
Genuine faith is rooted in the Word of God. When you know His will, you can speak it with confidence.
b) Faith flows from intimate fellowship with God (John 15:7)
Those who abide in God’s presence discern His mind and can declare His purpose with authority.
c) Faith aligns your desires with divine purpose (1 John 5:14-15)
Effective faith is not about personal gain but about fulfilling the purposes of God on earth.
d) Faith gives you boldness to speak in God’s authority (2 Corinthians 4:13)
When your faith is aligned with heaven’s agenda, your words carry divine power.
Biblical Example: Elijah declared drought and later rain in perfect alignment with God’s will, demonstrating faith that flowed from divine instruction (1 Kings 17:1; 18:41-45).
2. FAITH SPEAKS WITH AUTHORITY AND EXPECTATION
Faith doesn’t merely hope, it declares with authority, expecting divine manifestation. Joshua’s words were not empty wishes but commands released in faith, backed by heaven.
a) Faith declares what it believes (Mark 11:23)
Faith speaks the outcome before it happens because it is convinced of God’s power and promise.
b) Faith refuses to be intimidated by natural laws (Romans 4:19-21)
Abraham’s faith overlooked the deadness of Sarah’s womb because he believed in God’s creative power.
c) Faith speaks based on revelation, not reasoning (Hebrews 11:1)
Faith operates from the unseen realm, declaring the realities of heaven into the earth.
d) Faith produces results that glorify God (John 11:40)
Every act of true faith ultimately reveals God’s glory and strengthens the believer’s confidence.
Biblical Example: Jesus spoke to the storm, saying, “Peace, be still,” and the wind and waves obeyed Him (Mark 4:39-41).
3. FAITH CAN ALTER NATURAL LAWS FOR DIVINE PURPOSE
God, who created the universe, can suspend or redirect the laws of nature to fulfill His will. Faith is the divine key that unlocks such miracles.
a) God is sovereign over creation (Psalm 24:1-2)
All of creation belongs to God, and He controls its systems and seasons.
b) Faith invokes divine authority over natural elements (Joshua 10:12-14)
When Joshua spoke, the heavens responded because God confirmed his faith-driven command.
c) Faith manifests the supernatural in the natural realm (Hebrews 11:3)
By faith, the invisible power of God shapes visible realities.
d) Faith brings heaven’s order into earthly situations (Matthew 6:10)
Through faith, the will of God is enforced on earth as it is in heaven.
Biblical Example: Moses’ rod parted the Red Sea by faith, showing that God can override natural barriers to bring deliverance (Exodus 14:21-31).
4. FAITH THAT GLORIFIES GOD AND INSPIRES GENERATIONS
The miracle of the sun standing still was so extraordinary that Scripture declares there has never been another day like it. Such faith glorifies God and leaves a legacy for others to follow.
a) Faith produces testimonies that reveal God’s greatness (Joshua 10:14)
The miracle demonstrated that the Lord fights for His people and is worthy of praise.
b) Faith inspires others to trust God (Joshua 10:25)
Joshua’s boldness strengthened Israel’s courage to continue their conquests in faith.
c) Faith creates a legacy of divine intervention (Hebrews 11:33-34)
Those who live by faith write testimonies that future generations can stand upon.
d) Faith glorifies God, not man (John 15:8)
The purpose of every miracle of faith is to draw attention to God’s power and faithfulness.
