Summary: Marriage is a beautiful union between two individuals, built on love, trust, and mutual respect.
God's actions are always righteous (Deuteronomy 32:4) while human actions can be sinful and harmful.
As image-bearers of God, we're called to reflect His loving and holy character (1 Peter 1:16). In marriage, we can strive for selfless, Christ-like love (Ephesians 5:25-33), trusting God's sovereignty and provision.
Biblical Commands:
Despite being created in God's image, we're commanded to love without envy or jealousy (1 Corinthians 13:4), to avoid possessiveness and control (Galatians 6:1-2) and to reflect God's character in humility, kindness, and compassion (Colossians 3:12-14).
Created in God's image, we reflect His love, not His emotions. Let's pursue selfless, Christ-like love in marriage, trusting God's sovereignty.
Verses:
1. "Be holy, for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:16). We're called to reflect God's holiness, not mimic His emotions.
2. "You shall not covet" (Exodus 20:17). We're commanded to avoid sinful desires, including possessiveness.
While we're created in God's image, we can't justify sinful behaviours like jealousy and possessiveness and other toci God's emotions are perfect and righteous, whereas ours can be flawed and sinful. As image-bearers, we're called to reflect God's character in love, humility, and kindness, not mimic His emotions in sinful ways.
Why people twist or misapply Bible verses:
People often twist or misapply Bible verses due to confirmation bias, self-justification, lack of contextual understanding, or selectively focusing on specific verses while ignoring the broader counsel of God, leading to misguided interpretations that can distort the original meaning and intent of Scripture.
Consequences of twisting or misapplying Bible verses:
Twisting or misapplying Bible verses can have severe consequences, including misleading others, justifying sinful behaviours, undermining the authority and integrity of Scripture, and ultimately hindering personal spiritual growth and development.
Biblical warnings:
To faithfully interpret and apply Scripture, believers are commanded to neither add to nor take away from God's Word (Deuteronomy 4:2, Revelation 22:18-19), handle it with accuracy (2 Timothy 2:15), and diligently strive to present themselves as approved workers, unashamed and worthy of God's trust (2 Timothy 2:15).
Remember, the Bible is a sword, but it can be wielded for harm or for good (Hebrews 4:12). Let's strive to handle God's Word with care, humility, and integrity. Let us correctly interpret and apply Bible verses and pray for illumination and understanding (Psalm 119:18)
