Emphasize the importance of living with integrity and honesty, as God sees through our deception and dishonesty, and there can be severe consequences for such actions.
Good morning, Church Family! Today, we will be diving into a powerful and challenging passage from Acts 5:1-11.
As we embark on this journey together, let us remember the words of A.W. Tozer, who once said, "We cannot pray in love and live in hate and still think that we are worshiping God."
Here is the full passage from Acts 5:1-11:
[Read passage]
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word that continually speaks to us and challenges us to live lives of integrity and honesty. Open our hearts and minds today as we study this passage from Acts, and help us to see the areas in our lives where we might be living a front, deceiving others, or even ourselves. Lord, give us the courage to face the truth and the grace to make the changes necessary to live in Your truth. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
The first thing we will explore is the dangers of living a front. Living a front is when we put on a facade, pretending to be something we are not, or hiding our true selves from others. This can manifest in various ways, such as pretending to be more spiritual than we are, hiding our struggles and sins, or even lying about our actions and intentions. The story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5 demonstrates just this.
In this passage, Ananias and Sapphira sold a piece of property and decided to keep back some of the proceeds for themselves while pretending to give the entire amount to the apostles. They wanted to appear generous and sacrificial in the eyes of others, but in reality, they were being dishonest and deceitful. This act of deception ultimately led to their deaths, as God saw through their lies and struck them down.
When we continually deceive others and ourselves, we become numb to the conviction of the Holy Spirit and the truth of God's Word. We may even begin to believe our own lies, convincing ourselves that we are righteous and deserving of praise. This hardening of the heart can make it difficult for us to repent and turn back to God, as we may not even recognize our need for forgiveness and transformation.
Another danger is that it can damage our relationships with others. When we are not honest and authentic with those around us, we create a barrier that prevents true connection and intimacy. Our friends and family may sense that something is off, but they may not be able to pinpoint the issue. This can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness, as we are unable to truly share our lives with others. Furthermore, when our deception is eventually exposed, it can cause significant harm to our relationships, as trust is broken and our true character is revealed.
Living a front can also hinder our spiritual growth and relationship with God. When we are not honest with ourselves and others about our struggles, sins, and shortcomings, we miss out on the opportunity for accountability, encouragement, and growth. We may also be less likely to seek out the help and support we need, as we are too busy maintaining our facade and hiding our true selves. This can lead to a stagnant spiritual life, as we are not allowing the Holy Spirit to convict, challenge, and change us.
When Christians are caught in deception and dishonesty, it can cause others to question the validity of our faith and the truth of the Gospel. This can be especially damaging when leaders within the Church are found to be living a front, as it can lead to disillusionment and distrust among the congregation. The story of Ananias and Sapphira serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of living a front and the importance of maintaining a life of integrity and honesty.
