Summary: Evil thoughts are not just negative thoughts or temptations, but thoughts that delight in doing harm to others.
Evil thoughts are not just negative thoughts or temptations, but thoughts that delight in doing harm to others. These thoughts come from the heart and defile us, leading to sin and wickedness. Matthew 15:18-20:"But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
The consequences of evil thoughts are severe. Firstly, they produce sin and wickedness, leading us away from God's truth. Secondly, they lead to death, both physically and spiritually. Thirdly, they destroy our souls, hardening our hearts and making us less like the loving and compassionate people God created us to be. And finally, they lead to hell, a fate worse than death.
The Bible warns us in Proverbs 23:7, "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." Our thoughts shape who we are and the choices we make. If we indulge in evil thoughts, we risk becoming vessels of darkness.
Moreover, evil thoughts can lead to a downward spiral of sin and selfishness. As we entertain these thoughts, we become desensitized to their harmful nature and begin to normalize behaviors that grieve the Holy Spirit.
As we renew our minds and replace evil thoughts with godly ones, we begin to experience the transformative power of God's Word. Philippians 4:8 reminds us to focus on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable.
By doing so, we become more like Jesus, and our thoughts and actions align with His will. We become vessels of light, filled with the fruit of the Spirit, and our lives become a testimony to God's grace and redemption.
But there is hope! Through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, we can be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Romans 12:2 reminds us, "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
Let us choose to exchange our evil thoughts for the mind of Christ. May we meditate on things that are pure, lovely, and noble, and bring light into the darkness. Remember, that the battle for our minds is real. But we have the victory in Christ Jesus. Let us put on the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and fight against the evil thoughts that seek to destroy us.
May we be empowered by the Holy Spirit to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. Amen.
