Explores the divine promise, preparation, and proclamation of Jesus' birth in Luke 1, emphasizing the hope and redemption found in Christ's arrival.

Introduction

Good morning, beloved family of God. As we gather here today, we share in the joy and privilege of being in the presence of the Lord, united as one in His love. We come together not as mere individuals, but as a community, bound by our shared faith and the promise of eternal life. We are here to delve into the Word of God, to find comfort, guidance, and inspiration in its sacred texts.

Today, we turn our hearts and minds to the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke. This chapter tells a story of divine promise, preparation, and proclamation. It is a story that lays the foundation for the arrival of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prophetic Promise of the Savior

In the time of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah. He and his wife, Elizabeth, were both descendants of Aaron, making them part of the priestly lineage. They were righteous, living according to God's commands and decrees, yet they were childless. Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years. This couple, despite their faithfulness, found themselves in a situation that seemed hopeless.

God had a plan: He sent the angel Gabriel to Zechariah with a message of hope and promise. Elizabeth would bear a son, and they were to name him John. This child would be great in the sight of the Lord and filled with the Holy Spirit even before his birth. He would turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He would go before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

This was a prophetic promise: It was a promise of a Savior who would bring hope to a hopeless world, peace to a world in turmoil, and salvation to a world in need of redemption. This promise was not just for Zechariah and Elizabeth, but for all of humanity.

The promise of a Savior was not a new concept: It was a theme that ran throughout the Old Testament, from the promise made to Abraham that through his offspring all nations would be blessed, to the prophecies of Isaiah about a suffering servant who would bear our sins and bring us peace. The promise of a Savior was a thread that wove its way through the tapestry of God's interaction with His people, a constant reminder of His love and His plan for redemption.

This was a continuation of this thread: It was a promise that God was about to act in a powerful way, to bring His plan for salvation to fruition. The birth of John would be the beginning of the fulfillment of this promise. He would prepare the way for the Savior, turning the hearts of the people back to God and making ready a people prepared for the Lord.

The promise of a Savior was not just about the birth of a child: It was about the coming of the kingdom of God. It was about the breaking in of God's rule and reign into a world that was broken and in need of healing. The Savior would not just save individuals from their sins, but would usher in a new era of peace and justice, where the wolf would live with the lamb, the leopard would lie down with the goat, and a little child would lead them.

The promise of a Savior was about the restoration of relationship: The Savior would not just bring forgiveness of sins, but would reconcile humanity to God. He would tear down the wall of hostility that separated us from God, bringing us near by His blood. He would make peace between us and God, creating in Himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace.

The promise of a Savior was about the hope of eternal life: The Savior would not just bring temporary relief from the struggles and trials of this life, but would offer the hope of eternal life. He would defeat death, not just for Himself, but for all who believe in Him. He would offer the hope of a resurrection like His, a resurrection to eternal life in the presence of God.
