The Christian Walk

Summary: Do people really watch how Christians live? Does our walk really matter? These are some questions that each one of us has faced at one point or have faced over and over. Let's take a look at our Christians walk and see if it really matters.

The word “walk” makes up the entire Christian life of the believer.
The word “worthy” means “blessing”. 1 Thessalonians 2:12; because our God has called us into His family. Certain family members behave in certain fashions. We are to behave in a way which honors God, and makes others want to know Him. Do you know what turns more lost people away from Christ, than any other thing? The behavior of Christian people. Titus 1:16; “life and lips do not match or agree.
The word “vocation” is a “calling”. John 15:16; 2 Corinthians 5:20
After the Lord Jesus calls us, He says our lifestyle, our behavior is to be different. Romans 8:4; 1 Corinthians 3:3; 2 Corinthians 4:2; not in craftiness, a bait, fraud, guile, deceit. Ephesians 4:17; so, our walk or manner of life is to be different.
How Important is it “We Walk Different”?
1. Ephesians 4:1; “Beseech you” or I beg of you “It’s important to Paul”.
2. 2 Thessalonians 3:6; we are commanded to withdraw from those who do not walk right.
3. The time will come when it will mean a great deal to you, in this lifetime and in the world to come.
a. Lot, in Genesis 19:14; he seemed as one that mocked.
4. God is saying to us; “If we want our life to count for Him, for us, and for others, we must “walk worthy of the Lord.
5. So, let’s look at some “Steps in this Life.”
I. Walk in Newness of Life
Romans 6:4-13
1. In Romans 6; the old man is to be dead and buried, no longer alive and active.
2. All things become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
3. Ephesians 2:1-10; shows we have a new life, a spiritual life.
a. Ephesians 4:17-29; lists the ‘old’ man vs. ‘new’ man
4. Colossians 3:5-14; again, shows the contrast: put off vs. put on.
5. So, to begin “We walk in newness of life.
a. We are to die, cut off, the flesh of the old man.
b. The flesh is no longer in control.
II. Walk by Faith
2 Corinthians 5:7; Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38
1. Hebrews 11:1, is the meaning of faith. “The evidence of things not seen.”
a. Faith is to trust.
2. So “faith living” is to trust in the unseen.
a. Most of our living is by sight or by figuring, planning.
3. We are to walk “by” faith.
a. By or the means
4. The main ingredient in a Christian life is “faith”.
a. Your faith determines what you will do for God.
b. Your faith determines what God will do for you. Matthew 9:29; Hebrews 11:6
5. Jesus the master teacher, most of His teaching was concerning faith.
a. Little faith
b. Weak faith
c. No faith
d. Wrong faith
6. Is your manner of life directed by faith or by sight?
7. It’s to be a new walk, a walk by faith.
III. Walk in His Ways
Psalm 119:3
1. No iniquity. Psalm 119:3
2. If we walk in His way, we will listen to God’s word. Psalm 81:13; Colossians 3:15-17
3. Psalm 85:13; 86:11
4. His way is humility, meekness, with patience and in love. Ephesians 4:1-2
IV. Walk Circumspectly
Ephesians 5:15; walk carefully or accurately.
1. Word means “to look about or look on all sides” The Christian is not to leave his life to chance. Chart your course.
2. One who walks wisely before the Lord and other people.
Therefore, we are to walk:
In Newness of Life.
By Faith
In the Ways the Lord
Circumspectly
V. Walk in Love
Ephesians 5:1-2
1. We are to follow Christ and do as He did.
a. Love as He loved. 1 John 4:7-10
2. Love other Christians. John 1:34-35; 15:5,14
3. Jesus loved and obeyed His heavenly Father. John 14:31
4. Jesus loved those that were pleasing to His Father. John 8:29; 1 Thessalonians 4:1
5. Jesus loved the church. Ephesians 5:25; Acts 20:28
6. Jesus loved His enemies. Matthew 5:44
7. Jesus loved His sheep. John 13:1
8. Why walk in love?
a. Do you know what causes us to criticize others?
b. Gossip about others?
c. Condemn others?
No Love!
VI. Walk in Light
John 8:12; 1 John 1:5-10
1. There two walks mentioned.
a. Fellowship and light
b. Darkness and no fellowship with God or with other Christians.
2. When we walk in the light, we are aware of sin, and want to confess it. We desire to be clean.
3. Sin and darkness go together. John 3:18-21
4. In the light we can see, others can see.
a. Deeds done in darkness so they cannot be seen.
5. Light comes and is given by God’s word. Psalm 119:105; Hebrews 4:12; James 1:5
6. You follow what light you have; you respond to what you know. James 4:17
