HYMN #23: THE CHIEF SHEPHERD

Psalm 23

This psalm has probably been read and studied more than any other psalm. Let us be reminded about who our Shepherd is what He does for His sheep.

Psalms 23:1

He Is A Personal Shepherd

The word “my” is the most important word in this psalm. The Lord is a shepherd, He is the shepherd; but until you accept God’s gift of salvation He is not your shepherd. Until you can say, “The Lord is my shepherd”, it is meaningless. Once you can say, “The Lord is my shepherd”, then you can say, “I shall not be in want”.

Psalms 23:2-3, 5

He Is A Providing Shepherd

Notice the provision of the Chief Shepherd:

1. Provides rest.

2. Provides food.

3. Provides restoration.

4. Provides guidance.

5. Provides all of these things generously.

Psalms 23:4

He Is A Protecting Shepherd

God does not promise that we will not go through difficult times; but He does promise to go with us through those hard times. As we go, He protects us.

Psalms 23:6

He Is A Permanent Shepherd

God does not stop shepherding us. If we wander off, He will come find us. The Lord will always be my Shepherd and because of that “I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever”.
