Summary: This is the 2nd Sermon from Genesis about the life of Abraham, "Called To Promise".
Series: Called To Promise [#2]
THE CALL THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING
Genesis 12:1-9
Introduction:
Imagine you are standing at a fork in the road, and 1 path leads into the unknown. Suddenly, you hear a gentle voice calling you to take that path, promising a future you never imagined. This is what happened to Abram. God’s voice interrupted Abram’s normal life and invited him to go on a special journey. Just like Abram, we are also called by God to listen and trust Him, knowing that His promises can change everything in our lives.
This story reminds us that God's call is not just about where we will go, but about trusting Him along the way. When God called Abram, He was making a promise of blessing and a special future. As we learn about Abram’s journey, we see that God's call can change our whole life, too. It starts with a simple step of faith, trusting that God's plan is bigger than anything we can imagine. The call that changes everything begins with trusting God's promises and choosing to follow Him.
Genesis 12:1
God's call to…
1. Surrender and obedience.
God's call to Abram shows us that God is inviting us to let go of our own plans and trust Him completely. The Bible teaches us that God is in control, and when He calls us, we need to respond with obedience. Abram’s willingness to leave his home, family, and familiar life shows that he trusted God even when he didn’t know what would happen next. For us today, this means that following God's call might mean giving up some control or comfort. We need to trust that God's plans are better than ours, and by obeying Him, we open the way for His blessings and promises to come true in our lives.
Practically, Abram’s story teaches us that surrender isn’t just giving up; it’s trusting God actively. It’s a decision to put God's will above our own wishes or fears. When we choose to obey God, we start a journey where His promises become real in our lives. God’s call is always accompanied by His grace, giving us the strength to obey. As followers of Jesus, we are encouraged to respond quickly and completely when God calls us, trusting that His commands are for our good and His glory. True surrender and obedience change everything because they bring us closer to God's plan for our lives.
Genesis 12:2-3
God's call to…
2. A blessed purpose.
God's call to Abram shows us that He has a special purpose for His people- To bless others and bring His salvation to the World. God promises to make Abram into a great Nation, to bless him, and to make his name famous. This teaches us that God's call is not just for our own benefit, but to help us be part of His plan to bless everyone. God’s faithfulness means His blessings are meant to reach all Nations, and His purpose is rooted in His love and grace. When God calls us, He wants us to join in His plan to bless others, sharing His love and bringing His salvation to those around us. Our response should be to trust and follow Him, knowing that His blessings are meant to flow through our lives and make a difference everywhere we go.
Practically, this means that when God calls us, we should live with His purpose in mind. Just like Abram left his comfort zone and trusted God's promises, we are also called to step out in faith. We can do this by using our talents, time, and resources to serve others and help spread God's love. Understanding that our lives are part of God's bigger plan helps us see success differently, (not just for ourselves, but as fulfilling God's purpose to save and bless others). When we realize that our calling is part of God's plan for eternal good, we are encouraged to keep going through difficulties, knowing that we are helping change lives for His glory.
Genesis 12:4-9
God's call to…
3. Faith and worship.
God's call to Abram shows us what it means to trust and worship Him. When God told Abram to leave his home and go to a new land, Abram obeyed, even though he didn’t know exactly what would happen. This act of obedience was also a way to worship God- By trusting His plan and recognizing His power and goodness. The Bible teaches us that real faith means trusting God enough to give up our own plans and comfort, and to follow Him wherever He leads. For us today, this means trusting that God's plans are better than ours, and showing our worship by obeying Him, even if it’s hard or unfamiliar.
This story also shows that faith and worship go together. Abram’s journey wasn’t just about moving to a new place; it was about trusting God completely and showing Him honor through his actions. For us, worship isn’t just about singing or praying; it’s about daily trusting God, making decisions based on His guidance, and living in a way that shows we believe His promises. When we respond to God's call with faith, we are worshiping Him with our lives. This kind of trust and obedience can change everything, inspiring others to also trust and worship God, no matter what challenges they face.
