Summary: The Call of God
Acts 13 v 1-12 The Call of God
The Qualified - 1 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
Their Dignity - All men in good standing
Their Diversity - Different Gifts, Different Graces, Different Goals.
Their Deficiency - They Fast and Pray.
Their Discovery - In Prayer - the Will of God is Revealed.
Their Delivery - No sooner revealed - than fulfilled.
The Called - Their Practice - 2 As they ministered to the Lord,
Their Purpose - and fasted,
Their Power - the Holy Ghost said,
Their Pursuit - Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
There is Nothing more -
1. Personal than the Call of God - 2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them
He calls particular people to particular places for particular purposes.
2. Powerful than the Call of God - the Holy Ghost said,
Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind,
and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
3. Purposeful than the Call of God - 2 Separate me Barnabas and Saul
God has a purpose for every life.
4. Profitable than the Call of God - Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
5. Possible than the Call of God - Genesis 5:24
and Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him:
for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
6. Practical than the Call of God -
2 Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work
God chose the men, but He also chose the work for the men to do.
6. Providential than the Call of God - 2 Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them
This Greek expression is in the perfect tense indicating that this was something in the mind of God completed in ages past.
7. Perpetual than the Call of God - Luke 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
8. Pivotal than the Call of God - 1 Tim. 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
The Commissioned
The Prayer - 3 And when they had fasted and prayed,
The Partnership - and laid their hands on them,
The Parting - they sent them away.
The Controlled
The Sent - 4 So they,
The Sender - being sent forth by the Holy Ghost,
The Sending - departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.
The Committed
The Place - 5 And when they were at Salamis,
The Practice - they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews:
The Preparation - and they had also John to their minister.
The Writer of Mark's Gospel.
