'The BODY Of CHRIST'-Iâ1Corinthians 12:12-31
Attention:
?Has anyone here ever had to go to multiple medical doctors?...
?Has anyone here ever had to be referred to a âspecialistâ?
A âspecialistâ is a medical doctor who specializes in or is an expert in a certain area of the bodyâan internist, audiologist, cardiologist, neurologist, gastroenterologist, infectious disease specialist, urologist, gynecologist, orthopedist, neonatologist, etc.
What happens when these specialists work separately with no communication or sharing of their information regarding your physical condition?âBodily injury & loss of quality of life occur!
But what happens when all the specialists communicate & coordinate their findings?âHealing occurs!
Colossians 1:24-25ââI now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God,â
The apostle Paul maintained the significance of the Church's being the Body of Christ.
What is exhibited by that entity known as the Body of Christ?
The Body Of Christ Exhibits...
1âAn IDENTIFIABLE COMPOSITION(:12)
Explanation:
:12ââFor as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.â
âThe BodyâââMany membersâ(separately identifiable parts) functioning together.
Example: An analog clock or watchâAny âcogâ that is warped or broken negatively effects the purpose of the clock or watch.
â˘Likewise every âcogâ that is well tuned to itâs purpose(ministry) positively effects the overall effect of the entire apparatus.
âThe Body is oneâ
âThe Bodyâ âhas many membersâ
â˘âSo also is ChristââChrist Jesusâ âbodyâ is composed of âmany members.â Yet all the âmembersâ compose âone body.â & thus they work cohesively & âtellinglyâ together.
Rom. 12:4-5ââFor as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.â
2â The Body Of Christ Exhibits...
A WILLINGLY EMPOWERED INVITATION(:13)
Explanation:
:13ââFor by one Spirit we were all baptized into one bodyâwhether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or freeâand have all been made to drink into one Spirit.â
â˘âBy one SpiritâââOne bodyââDue to the fact that all OF that body, are of that body by immersion in Godâs Holy Spirit, originating from Godâs response to individual, personal faith.
â˘âWhether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or freeââBeyond(regardless of) belief system, origin, or perceived social status.
â˘âBaptizedâ & âMade to drinkââPersonally committed by your faithfulness to God, as well as Eternally committed by Godâs faithfulness to you.
â˘âInto one Spirit.ââInto nothing less than the fullness of God in Christ!
â˘NOT baptized or made to drink âintoâââfalse Religionââritualistic or philosophical.
â˘NOT baptized or made to drink âintoââa âworldly PhilosophyââA belief system comprising the examination of values & reality from a subjective viewpoint.
â˘NOT baptized or made to drink âintoâ âHumanismââa philosophy that is wholly man-centered, & is thus in opposition to that which is God-centered(Christianity).
3âThe Body Of Christ Exhibits...
BELONGING(:14-17)
Explanation:
:14ââFor in fact the body is not one member but many.â
â˘*If a local manifestation of the Body does NOT exhibit âbelongingâ among itâs membership, then it is acting independently of God, & thus is NOT manifesting the Body of Christ. Prayerfully there will always be individuals acting in faith in any local church. Yet the overall manifestation of the body of Christ that arises from that local body of believersâone that does NOT exhibit âbelongingââis skewed, incomplete, & unfulfilled.
â˘Likewise the manifestation of the body extends to not only the local body, but also to the global manifestation of Christâs presence among His people in every culture.
*Paul uses four comparisons to say, âsimply because someone or another is of the personal opinion that âsupposesâ him/herself to ânotâ be âof the bodyâ, does NOT make that skewed or aberrant opinion, REALITY!â
4 COMPARISONS:
:15ââFootââânot of the body?â
âIf the foot should say, âBecause I am not a hand, I am not of the body,â is it therefore not of the body?â
:16ââEarââânot of the body?â
âAnd if the ear should say, âBecause I am not an eye, I am not of the body,â is it therefore not of the body?â
:17aââEyeâââIf the whole body weâre an eyeâ
âIf the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing?...â
:17bââHearingâââIf the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling?â
:17cââSmellingââ
If the whole body consisted of one type of member then there would be no place for the others & the âbodyâ couldnât possibly function. There would then be no actual âbodyâ at all because a âbodyâ consists of many separately interrelated parts.
âIt is obvious in a body that no part is autonomous.ââDEG in BECNT
