The Blood of our Salvation …. Communion Sunday

What the scripture teaches us about the blood of Christ which saves us?

OT understanding of Passover Ex 12:13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

NT understanding of Passover 1Cor 5:7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

I. First mention of blood in scripture

A. Death Gen 4:10 And He said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.

B. Life OT / Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’

Jn 6:53,4 Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.:54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

II. What the scriptures teach about the blood of Christ

A. Eternally Appointed Rev 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

B. Innocent Mat 27:4 3 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." And they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!" 5 Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.

Fearful Pilate’s Court the Government of Rome Luke 23:14 14 said to them, "You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him

Luk 23:22 Then he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go."

C. Precious

1Pe 1:19 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot

D. Necessary Heb 9:22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

Mat 26:28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

E. Sufficient

Heb 9:14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

F. Final

Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption [for us]. Heb 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

III. The blood brings about;

A. Reconciliation

Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

2Cr 5:18 And all things [are] of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

B. Redemption

Col 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, [even] the forgiveness of sins: 1Pe 1:18,9 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, [as] silver and gold, from your vain conversation [received] by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

C. Justification Rom 5:9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

. Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
