The Arrival of the King

Matthew 21:1-17

I. His Arrival Was Marked With Humility (v. 1-7)

A. In Humility He Demonstrated His Unity With the Father

1. Unified in purpose

2. Unified in love

B. In Humility He fulfilled Prophecy (v. 4-5; Zechariah 9:9)

1. In doing this He demonstrated His Person

2. In doing this He was revealed to the deeply religious

C. In Humility He Headed to the Cross

II. His Arrival Was Marked With Recognition (v. 8-11)

A. He was recognized by some as their earthly king (v. 8)

1. They were looking for the next David

2. They were looking for relief from Rome

B. He was recognized by some as One to be worshiped (v. 9)

He is worthy of worship because:

1. He is the Son of the Living God

2. He is the firstborn from the dead

3. He is the perfect Lamb of God

4. He is Creator and Redeemer

5. He is the Returning and Righteous Judge

C. He was recognized by some as a novelty (v. 10-11)

1. A novelty because of the miracles

2. A novelty because of His opposition

3. A novelty because of His claims

III. His Arrival Was Marked With Boldness (v. 12-17)

A. His boldness declared His authority in His temple (v. 12-13)

We must ask ourselves today two questions:

• Does He have real authority in His house, our church?

• Does He have real authority in His temple, our body?

B. His boldness set things in order (v. 14-15)

1. He removed man centered practices

2. He became the focal point of the temple

C. His boldness declared His Deity (v. 16)

1. He declared His desire to be worshiped (Ps. 8:2)

2. He declared it was decision time for Jerusalem
