The Anchor of my Soul

Hebrews 6: 18-20

Heb 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast and which entereth into that within the veil;

20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made a high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

(KJV)

There is an old hymn of the church which helps give us hope in the perilous we are living in today.

Upon life’s boundless ocean where mighty billows blow,

I’ve fixed my hope in Jesus, blessed anchor of my soul;

When trials fierce assail me as storms are gathering o’er,

I rest upon His mercy and trust Him more.

Chorus: I’ve anchored in Jesus, the storms of life I’ll brave,

I’ve anchored in Jesus, I fear no wind or wave,

I’ve anchored in Jesus for He hath power to save,

I’ve anchored to the Rock of Ages.

He is my Friend and Savior, in Him my anchor’s cast,

He drives away my sorrows and shields me from the blast;

By faith I’m looking upward beyond life’s troubled sea,

There I behold a haven prepared for me.

Paul writes in verse 18, “we might have a strong consolation,” or, comfort, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.”

“Who have fled for refuge, to lay hold upon the hope set before us.”

Meaning;

“Fled from the wrath revealed against sin, to the Gospel with its promises and blessed hopes.”

Listen church, what this old world needs today is this anchor, for the world is rocking in every direction.

It needs the divine anchor of the Lord Jesus Christ.

What an anchor! Jesus is the Rock. The Rock is in heaven.

We are anchored to the rock behind the veil.

The hope that is set before us is not of this world.

It reaches all the way from our hearts right into the presence of God.

Listen, we are anchored up there!

The chain reaches from earth to heaven.

If we were anchored to the things of this world the anchor would slip, but the surety of our salvation is anchored to the Rock who is in heaven.

Its an anchor that can neither break or drag.

The amplified bible says. “It cannot slip and it cannot break down under whoever steps upon it.

My friend, no matter how stormy the sea of life may become, we are anchored in Christ Jesus, and He is holding fast and secure.

Never once has that chain broken. We are anchored in Him.

This anchor is firmly fixed in the holy of holies, within the veil, or in the presence of God.

Really, can you anchor your soul to the things of this world? Can you depend upon this world to hold you steadfast and secure? Can you really place your trust in this old world?

When we allowed Jesus to enter our hearts and lives, we were anchored securely in Him. We can hold on and endure to the very end, for we are anchored to Him who is within the veil.

We hold on to the end of the anchor of faith, for there is a divine hand holding to the other end. That is our assurance!

When it comes time for you to leave this world you need to know your anchor is holding steadfast in Jesus.

If your anchor is your money, it will fail. If you anchor is in your material possessions, they will fail.

If your anchor is in your church membership, it will fail.

If your anchor is in your good works and good deeds, they will fail.

If your anchor or faith is in religion, religion will fail.

But if your anchor of faith is in Jesus, He will hold you steadfast and secure.

We need not go through life with worry and fear that the Lord will leave us behind when He comes, or when we die.

Our souls are secure, anchored in Him. When we die in the Lord, He simply pulls our ship of life right into the harbor.

No more storms of life that threatens our hope. No more waves of doubt and despair to beat against our ship.

No more fear and anxiety, but He will simply pull our ship safely to the shore of our heavenly home where we will be safe forevermore.

Oh yes, our anchor is steadfast and sure. It cannot give way, neither will it break down under any weight or strain.

You see our anchor is our faith. We have placed our faith in Jesus Christ, for He and He alone is our salvation, our deliverer, and our Savior.
