This sermon explores God's promises, the perseverance of His children, and His divine protection, using Noah's story as an example of grace amidst wickedness.
Welcome, dear friends and family of faith, to this beautiful day that the Lord has made. A day filled with the promise of hope, the whisper of grace, and the echo of love that reverberates through the ages. We gather here today, not by accident, but by divine appointment, to open our hearts and minds to the timeless truths found in the sacred pages of God's Holy Word.
Today, we turn our attention to the book of beginnings, Genesis, specifically Genesis 6:1-8. This passage of Scripture is like a wellspring in a desert, a beacon in the dark, a compass in the wilderness, guiding us, nourishing us, and illuminating our path. Let's read together: "When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, 'My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.' The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown. The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, 'I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.' But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord."
In this passage, we see a world in turmoil, a world lost in its wickedness. Yet, in the midst of all this, there is a glimmer of hope, a promise of protection, a beacon of God's grace - Noah, who found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
The first promise of a Savior, a Redeemer, one who would come to crush the serpent's head and deliver humanity from the curse of sin. This promise is the golden thread that runs through the entire Bible, connecting every story, every prophecy, every teaching to the person and work of Jesus Christ.
The promise of a nation, a people set apart for God's purposes. Through this nation, the Savior would come. Through this nation, the world would be blessed. This promise is the foundation of God's plan for the redemption of the world.
This is the promise of a multitude, a countless number of descendants who would carry the promise of the Savior to the ends of the earth. This promise is the assurance of God's faithfulness to fulfill His word.
This is the promise of victory, of triumph over the enemies of God. Through the descendants of Abraham, God would bring about His kingdom on earth. This promise is the guarantee of God's power to overcome all opposition to His purposes.
