Summary: Of the wonderful names given to our Lord, and they are many, none is more precious than that name which is above every name...JESUS!

THAT BEAUTIFUL NAME

“She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21.

One of the most beautiful hymns ever written is entitled “That Beautiful Name” by Jean Perry (1865-1935). The first two stanzas beautifully portray the Christmas story.

“I know of a Name, A beautiful Name,

That angels brought down to earth;

They whispered it low, One night long ago,

To a maiden of lowly birth.

“I know of a Name, A beautiful Name,

That unto a Babe was given;

The stars glittered bright throughout that glad night

And angels praised God in heaven.

“That beautiful Name, That beautiful Name

From sin has power to free us!

That beautiful Name, That wonderful Name,

That matchless Name is Jesus!”

We join with George W. Bethune in proclaiming:

“There is no name so sweet on earth, No name so sweet in heaven,

The Name, before His wondrous birth, to Christ the Savior given.”

We echo the words of hymn writer, Lela B. Long in testifying that “Jesus is the sweetest name I know, And He’s just the same as His lovely name, and that’s the reason why I love Him so; Oh, Jesus is the sweetest name I know.”

SOME MARVELOUS NAMES FOR OUR LORD JESUS FROM ISAIAH 9:6

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is give: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Let us look carefully at the names given in this verse:

Wonderful: Speaks of His love, mercy, grace, compassion, care, goodness, etc.

Counselor: “One who advises or guides”. “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, e will guide you into all truth.” John 16:13

The mighty God: “For God so loved the world…”

The everlasting Father:

“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.” Philip said to Him, ‘Lord show us the Father, and it is enough for us.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how do you say, Show us the Father.” John 14: 7-9

The Prince of Peace: ‘Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14: 27.

These names confirm Colossians 2:9 “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.”

One of several significant things about this prophecy is that it was given 600 years before the birth of Christ. This means that it did not go back and recount the wonderful ministry of Jesus as history past…but that it foretold what would be true of Christ when He came into the world.

The New Testament adds other beautiful names for the Lord Jesus. To mention a few: “Jesus”; “Immanuel”; “The Son of Man”; “The Son of God”; “The Good Shepherd”; “Lord”; “Savior”; “The Alpha and the Omega”; "The Beginning and the End"; “Kings of kings” and “Lord of lords".

But the sweetest name of all to every believer is "JESUS". When he was eight days old Mary’s infant Son was circumcised and given the name "JESUS" which literally means: "the Lord saves.”

And the Scriptures affirm without qualification that “there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved” Acts 4:12.
