Supplemental Passage: in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NASB

Introduction: How do you obey the commands of Scripture? Grudgingly? In fear of punishment? Paul gives three of the most important commands of Scripture about how to live out our daily lives, but in each command he also tells us how to obey:

I. Let the Peace of Christ rule in your hearts…AND BE THANKFUL

a. Peace is the legacy Jesus left His disciples:

i. "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. (John 14:27 NASB)

b. We need not worry or be anxious; God will take care of us

i. "Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?' "For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. (Matthew 6:31-32 NASB)

II. Let the Word of Christ richly dwell within you…WITH THANKFULNESS IN YOUR HEARTS

a. The Doctrine of Christ; the Word of God

i. How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers. (Psalms 1:1-3 NASB)

ii. Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You. (Psalms 119:11 NASB)

b. Songs, Hymns, Spiritual Songs

i. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. (Philippians 4:8 NASB)

III. And whatever your do…do it all in the Name of the Lord Jesus, GIVING THANKS to God.

a. Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. (Colossians 3:23-24 NASB)

b. Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Invitation/Application: Are you living peacefully with God and others? Do you all the word of Christ to penetrate your life daily? Is everything you do worthy to be done in Christ’s name? As we carry out these commands of Scripture, let us do so with thanksgiving. We live in a world where everyone feels entitled to get something for nothing. And when they do get it, they usually aren’t grateful for it. What if all you had today was what your thanked God for yesterday? How much would you have today? It is God who provides all of our needs! Let’s be grateful to Him!
