Terrible As An Army With Banners Series
Contributed by Jonathan Campbell on Apr 5, 2008 (message contributor)
Summary: The church of Christ is like an army.
INTRODUCTION
Text - "Terrible as an army with banners".
Notice that it occurs twice - verses 4 + 10.
1. ARMIES HAVE LEADERS
Christ leads His church. He is the Captain and Commander of His people - read Hebrews 2:10 + Isaiah 55:4.
2. ARMIES HAVE ENEMIES
The enemy of the church is Satan and his evil spirits. Our enemy is both "a roaring lion" and "an angel of light". He is both cruel and crafty.
3. ARMIES HAVE ARMOUR
Christ’s army has heavenly armour - read Ephesians 6:11-17. But there is no armour for your back. What’s the lesson? Don’t run away from the fight!
4. ARMIES HAVE BANNERS
Every army has a flag with their logo on it.
The church of Jesus has banners -
a) The Lord of Glory - read Exodus 17:15.
b) The Love of God - read Song of Solomon 2:4.
5. ARMIES HAVE SOLDIERS
An army is made up of foot soldiers. Are you one of Christ’s soldiers? 2 Timothy 2:3 "Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ".
Ho, my comrades! see the signal
Waving in the sky!
Reinforcements now appearing,
Victory is nigh!
Fierce and long the battle rages,
But our help is near:
Onward comes our great Commander,
Cheer, my comrades, cheer!
Hold the fort, for I am coming,
Jesus signals still;
Wave the answer back to heaven,
By Thy grace we will.
