Temptation

James 1:13–15

I. Temptation comes from the devil through our own evil desires. James 1:13

A. The devil is called the “tempter” in the bible. Matt. 4:3; 1 Thess. 3:5

B. Jesus was tempted in this way. Matt. 4:1–11

1. Through His hunger.

2. By his desire to be accepted by man.

3. By the basic human desire to have things.

C. The devils mode of temptation has Never Changed. 1 John 2:16

1. Cravings of Man.

2. Lust of the eyes.

3. The boasting of what he has and does.

II. When tempted, we always have choices.

A. God always provides a way of escape. 1 Cor. 10:13

B. We can resist temptation.

1. James 4:7–8

2. Matt. 4:10–11

C. We can give in to our desires. James 1:14

III. Failure when tempted causes death; resistance and repentance causes growth. James 1:15

A. Continuing in sin causes separation from God. 1 John 3:4–6

B. Resistance and Repentance keeps us in fellowship with God. 1 John 1:7–9
