Talking To Yourself
Contributed by Don Hutto on Mar 2, 2001 (message contributor)
Summary: Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of the great things that God has done for us.
Talking To Yourself
Psalm 103:1-5
I. Introduction
Do you ever catch yourself talking to yourself? Of course we all have. Even King David talked to himself. And when he did, he reminded himself to honor God.
II. The Blessing
Usually when we think of blessing, we think of God blessing us. We think of the rewards we will receive from Him. But David says we are to bless God, also. How do we bless God?
A. By Acknowledging Who He Is.
11 times in the Psalms David says "O Lord, my God."
B. By Expressing Gratitude For What He Has Done.
Knowing what God has done is just the beginning. Saying thank you for what He has done is a must.
C. By Extolling His Virtues.
Jesus said "there is none good but one, that is, God." (Mt. 19:17)
III. The Benefits
Sometimes our mind plays tricks on us and does not remember as it should. Sometimes we dwell on the bad and forget the good. David says we must remember the good that God has done for us.
A. He Forgives Us (v. 3)
God’s forgiveness is not a one time thing. 1 John 1:9
B. He Heals Us (v. 3)
Our focus is often on physical healing when what we need is spiritual healing. What does it profit a man if he is healthy as a horse and loses his soul?
C. He Redeems Us (v. 4)
Literally from "the pit."
D. He Crowns Us With His Lovingkindness and Tender Mercies (v. 4)
Our crown will not tarnish or canker because it is not made of perishables like silver and gold.
E. He Satisfies Us (v. 5)
Darby translates this "Who satisfieth thine old age with good; thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s." (DNT)
IV. Conclusion
When you must talk to yourself, talk to yourself about God!
