Summary: In many ways, children are like candles. Can you think of any? I organized a child dedication service around this theme.

Taking Care of your Candle

Safety First...

•Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Pr 29:15

The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

Pr 16:25

There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

•Never place a burning candle near something flammable.

Solomon speaking to his son about sin of adultery

Proverbs 6:27-28

Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

What else is out there that can burn our children?

•Keep burning candles out of reach of pets.

1Pe 5:8

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Teach your child about the Devil and difference between honoring God and not honoring God.

Pray a hedge of protection around them (Job). Devil is a like a roaring Lion seeks to devour them.

•Always place your candle on a heat-resistant, flameproof surface before lighting it.

Colossians 3:16

Let the words of Christ, in all their richness, live in your hearts and make you wise. Use his words to teach and counsel each other. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.

When we live by the Word of God, what we do will last it will be flameproof.

•Use caution when blowing out your candle. Blowing with force could cause the melted wax to splatter. For safest results, extinguish your candle using a candlesnuffer.

Eph. 6:4

And now a word to you fathers. Don’t make your children angry by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction approved by the Lord.

•To prevent smoking, trim wick to ¼ inch prior to each use and keep trimmed.

Pr 13:24

If you refuse to discipline your children, it proves you don’t love them; if you love your children, you will be prompt to discipline them.

More Candle Care Tips...

•Burning candles in groups will affect the burn time and quality of the burn because the heat generated by the candles will cause rapid melting and softening of the wax.

Teach the importance of community and interdependence.

Pr 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Each child is different. Teach them to think for themselves.

•Remove any bits of wick or other foreign matter from the pool of melted wax after extinguishing your candle.

Helping your child keep a short list of sins to confess.

•Burn away from draughts. This can cause uneven burning of your candle.

People who would try to put out the flame.

•Discontinue use of a container candle when ½" of wax remains.

There is a time for letting go. Everything you do now should be to prepare them for that day.

Mom and Dad, you are candles too.

Matthew 5

You are the light of the world – like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see.

Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all.

In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
