Youth Sermon: Take Up Your Cross

Taking Up Our Cross

Today, we're gonna talk about something taking up our crosses, and I've got a cool object lesson to help us understand it better. But first, let's dive into the message.

You know, life can be pretty hard sometimes, right? Jesus actually told us that we'd face some tough times. Check out what He said in Matthew 16:24: 'Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.'

So, what does it mean to take up our cross? It's not like we're literally carrying around a wooden cross, right? Jesus is using this as a metaphor to teach us some powerful truths. Let's break it down.

'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.'

Expect Pain

First, taking up our cross means we can expect pain. Jesus said in John 16:33, 'In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.' Life won't always be easy, but Jesus has our back.

I've got this backpack here, and inside are some heavy rocks. I want you to imagine that each rock represents a challenge or pain we might face in life. As we follow Jesus, we might have to carry these 'rocks' with us. It's not easy, but Jesus gives us the strength to keep going.

Expect Loneliness

Second, taking up our cross means we can expect loneliness. Sometimes, following Jesus might make us feel like we're all alone. But remember, Jesus felt alone too when He carried His cross. Even when we feel lonely, God is always with us.

Expect Partnership

Lastly, taking up our cross means we can expect partnership. We're not in this alone! We're part of God's family, and we get to work together with Jesus to make a difference in the world.

Application

So, how can we apply this to our lives? When things get tough, remember that Jesus is with you, helping you carry your 'cross.' And don't forget, you've got a whole family of believers to support you too!

Prayer

God, thank you for always being with us, even when life gets tough. Help us to take up our cross and follow you, no matter what challenges we face. Give us the strength to keep going and the courage to lean on our brothers and sisters in Christ. Amen.
