THE BOOK STUDY ON COLOSSIANS
CHAPTER ONE
TEXT: COLOSSIANS 1:9-29
The focus of the book of Colossians is to see the " Christ of the Church" as Apostle Paul stressed about it.As we study, let us reflect on our own local Church and assembly.
1) The preeminence of Christ - Colossians 1:15-18
Preeminent means exceeding others in quality or rank, of outstanding excellence, and extremely notable or importance.
The following points show that Jesus Christ is preeminent over all
a) He is the exact likeness of the unseen God (the visible representation of God) - Colossians 1:15,Philippians 2:6, 2 Cor 4:4.
b) The First born of all creation - Colossians 1:16, John 1:1-3
All things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things- Col 1:17
c) He is the Head of the Church (the body) - Col 1:18, Ephesians 1:22, Ephesians 5:23
d) All things consist and are held together in Christ - Colossians 1:17, Col 2:10
e) The Fullness of God is in Christ- Colossians 1:19, Colossians 2:9, John 1:14-16
2) Reconciliation through Christ- Colossians 1:20-23, Rom 5:1, 2 Cor 5:17-21
Our reconciliation became possible through Christ; by His death and blood on the cross. The message of reconciliation is centered around the love of God and death of Christ. The reconciliation brought to us the following:
a) Presented us Holy and blameless- Ephesians 1:4, Hebrews 10:10,14
b) Above reproach-Colossians 1:22
c) No more enemies and alienated- Ephesians 2:11-22
3) Qualified by the Father - Colossians 1:12, Ephesians 5:8, Acts 20:32
The sin of man disqualified us but the Father qualified us through His Son; Jesus Christ so that we can be partakers of the saints' inheritance in the light which are:
a) Deliverance from the power of darkness and has transferred us to the Kingdom of His Beloved Son; Jesus Christ- Ephesians 2:18, Acts 26:18, Colossians 1:13, Ephesians 1:19-23
b) We have redemption through the blood of Christ - Colossians 1:14
Redemption means salvation from sin or the rescue upon a payment of a ransom. Jesus Christ paid with His life and blood that gave us the forgiveness of sins.
4) Ministerial Functions- Colossians 1:23-29
Paul was a minister to the Colossians Church, as we are ministers today - 1 Cor 5:18, Heb 1:7
a) Labour and suffer for the Church - Colossians 1:24, 29
b) Preach, warn and teach - Colossians 1:28
c) Present every man perfect in Christ Jesus - Colossians 1:28
d) Making known the riches of the glorious mystery - Christ in us, the hope of glory - Colossians 1:26-27
5) The prayers for the Church - Colossians 1:9-11
a) To be filled with the Knowledge of His will - Colossians 1:9, Philippians 1:27-30
b) To have wisdom and spiritual understanding- Colossians 1:9, Ephesians 1:18
c) To walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing- Ephesians 4:1, Ephesians 5:10, 1 Thess 2:12
d) To be fruitful in every good work - 1 Peter 1:5-9, Titus 3:14
e) Increasing in the knowledge of God - Colossians 1:10, 1 Peter 2:2, 2 Peter 1:2
f) To receive strength according to God's power - Col 1:11
g) Patience and longsuffering- Philippians 4:1, Colossians 1:11
