STUDY IN REVELATION 33

Satan is Bound

Revelation 20: 1-3

V. 1 John saw an angel come down from heaven.

Notice that the angel coming from heaven means he comes from the presence of God.

This angel has two things in his hand:

1. The key to the presidential suite at the Ritz hotel his new Z71 the bottomless pit.

2. ›a chainsaw ›chain-mail letter ›a chain

Because of these two items many believe this angel is really Jesus Himself.

Let’s look at the evidence:

The first thing we see is the fact that the angel is holding the key to the bottomless pit.

Rev 1:18 “I [am] he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”

Those who believe this to be Jesus say that He would never give His keys to anyone.

There is one thing to look at in verse 1. “And I saw an angel come down out of heaven…

Jesus has never been described as “an angel” He is always described as “The Angel of God”

But let’s look at another passage:

Rev 9:1-3 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

The angel in Rev. 20: 1 steals the key finds the key is given the key [trick question]

Regardless of what you believe here, the angel has the authority to open the bottomless pit, because he has the key.

He has a chain in his hand, which gives him the power to bind Satan.

V. 2 Who is Satan?

1. He is the dragon. He is the spiritual power that stirs up the cruel passions of people and governments.

2. He is that old serpent. He is the spiteful power that deceives people and leads them into sin.

Rev 12:9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

2Cr 11:3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ

3. He is the devil. He is the spiritual power that slanders and lies, destroys lives. He leads people to slander, lie and murder.

John 8:44 You are of [your] father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own [resources], for he is a liar and the father of it.

4.He is Satan. The enemy of God that stands and accuses those who have received Christ.

V. 2 Satan will be bound for:one week 40 days and 40 nights 1000 years

What do you think the world will be like for those 1000 years?

V. 3 Where will Satan be placed for the 1000 years? ™Ritz hotel ™his room ™The bottomless pit

Satan will be bound and cast into the bottomless pit for on reason, so that he will not be able to deceive the world.

What happens at the end of the 1000 years?

œSatan repents, because he learned his lesson

œhe leaves the earth never to be seen again

œset free for just a little while
