Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
This sermon provides encouragement for those currently experiencing suffering, as well as those who may face it in the future. It emphasizes the strength and joy that can be found even in times of hardship.
Today, I want to encourage all of you who are going through difficult times. Despite the challenges we face, we can still find joy and stand strong. No matter what we've been through, we can declare, "I'm still standing!" In his second letter to the Corinthians, Paul addresses three main points: defending his ministry, refuting false accusations, and urging the church to support the poor. In this letter, Paul emphasizes the concept of suffering, which is the underlying cause of much of his own struggles and those of other believers.
In verse 7, Paul highlights the treasure we possess as believers. He compares our bodies to fragile clay jars that hold the precious treasure of the gospel. This serves to show that the power behind the message comes from God, not from us. The contrast between the greatness of the gospel and our human frailty is intentional, so that no one questions the source of its power. Salvation is God's work, not ours.
Paul acknowledges the reality of suffering in verses 8 and 9. He describes being troubled and perplexed, but not crushed or in despair. He also mentions being persecuted but not abandoned, and being struck down but not destroyed. These experiences are part of the Christian journey, and Paul wants us to understand that even in the midst of suffering, we can find hope and strength.
The desired reaction to suffering, according to Paul, is to endure it for the cause of Christ and for God's glory (verse 10). Our suffering can serve a greater purpose and bring honor to God.
Paul also highlights the rewards that come from enduring suffering. He mentions the hope of resurrection in verse 14 and the promise of renewal in verses 16-18. Our temporary afflictions are nothing compared to the eternal glory that awaits us. We can find comfort in knowing that our suffering has a purpose and that God is working through it to bring about something greater.
In conclusion, let us remember that even in the face of suffering, we can stand strong. Like Paul, we may be troubled, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down, but we are not crushed, in despair, abandoned, or destroyed. Our suffering is temporary, and it pales in comparison to the eternal glory that awaits us. So let us endure with hope and find strength in knowing that God is with us every step of the way.
