Encourage believers to be alert, stand firm in their faith, be courageous and strong, and to do everything in love.
Good morning, everyone! Welcome to this blessed gathering.
Today, we delve into the heart of 1 Corinthians 16:13-14, which says,
"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love."
In the words of A.W. Tozer, "Faith is the gaze of a soul upon a saving God." Faith is our armor, our shield, our fortress. It's what helps us to be alert, to stand firm, to be courageous, and to be strengthened. And above all, it's what binds us together in the love of Christ.
Let's begin with a prayer.
Dear Heavenly Father, we ask for your guidance as we delve into the teachings of 1 Corinthians. May we be ever watchful and firm in our faith, courageous and strengthened in you, and united and standing together in love. May your words inspire us, strengthen us, and fill us with your unending love. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.
Let’s get started!
In the context of the verse, "Be on your guard" is a call to spiritual vigilance. It's a reminder that as Christians, we are in a spiritual battle against forces that seek to undermine our faith and draw us away from God. This is not a physical battle, but a spiritual one, fought in the realm of thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes. It's a battle that requires us to be alert and aware, to recognize the subtle ways in which our faith can be eroded or compromised.
Being aware of the spiritual realities that surround us: It means recognizing that we are not just physical beings living in a physical world, but spiritual beings living in a spiritual world. It means being aware of the spiritual forces at work in our lives, both good and evil. It means being able to discern the difference between truth and deception, between God's voice and the voice of the enemy.
Being alert is not enough: We must also stand firm in our faith. Standing firm means holding fast to our beliefs, even when they are challenged or threatened. It means not being swayed by the changing winds of culture or popular opinion. It means not compromising our faith for the sake of convenience or comfort. It means being willing to endure hardship, persecution, or even death for the sake of Christ.
Being rooted and grounded in the Word of God: It means knowing what we believe and why we believe it. It means being able to defend our faith against the attacks of skeptics and critics. It means being able to give a reason for the hope that is in us, with gentleness and respect.
Not a passive stance: It's an active one. It involves actively seeking God, actively pursuing a deeper relationship with Him, actively growing in our knowledge and understanding of Him. It involves actively living out our faith in our daily lives, in our words and actions, in our relationships and decisions, in our priorities and values.
Not something we do in our own strength: It's something we do in the strength of the Lord. It's something we do through the power of the Holy Spirit, who lives in us and empowers us. It's something we do through the grace of God, who gives us the ability to stand firm and the courage to be alert.
A lifelong process: It's a journey of growth and maturity, of learning and unlearning, of falling and rising again. It's a journey that requires patience and perseverance, humility and courage, wisdom and discernment.
Not a solitary endeavor, a communal one: It's something we do together, as the body of Christ. It's something we do in fellowship with other believers, encouraging and supporting one another, holding each other accountable, praying for each other, learning from each other.
It’s about God: It's about His glory, His kingdom, His purposes. It's about being faithful to Him, honoring Him, serving Him. It's about being a witness to His love, His grace, His truth.
Pastor, here would be a good place to share a personal story about a time when you had to stand firm in your faith. How was this difficult for you?
