This sermon encourages Christians to continually seek spiritual growth, apply Christ's teachings, and persevere in faith, fostering a dynamic, evolving relationship with Christ.

Introduction

Good morning, beloved family of God. Isn't it a blessing to be gathered here today, in the house of the Lord, with hearts full of gratitude and spirits eager for the nourishment of His Word? Today, we find ourselves on the threshold of an enriching discourse that will guide us on the path of spiritual growth, fortitude in Christ's teachings, and perseverance in our faith.

Our esteemed brother in Christ, Sinclair Ferguson, once said, "There is nothing more important to learn about Christian growth than this: Growing in grace means becoming like Christ." A simple statement, yet profound in its implications. It suggests that our relationship with Christ is not a static one, but a dynamic, evolving bond that grows deeper and stronger as we continually seek to understand His teachings and apply them in our lives.

Let us turn our hearts to the Scripture, which will serve as the foundation for our discussion today.

In 2 Peter 3:18, we read, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen." And in Colossians 1:9-10, the Word of God says, "For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God." Finally, in 1 Peter 2:2, we are reminded, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation."

These verses, my dear brothers and sisters, are a clarion call for us to seek progress in our spiritual walk, to practice the teachings of Christ with fervor, and to persevere in our faith, even when the going gets tough.

Let us bow our heads in prayer. Heavenly Father, we thank You for the opportunity to gather here today in Your holy presence. As we embark on this discourse, we pray for Your divine guidance. Open our hearts and minds to Your Word, and help us grow in our understanding of Your teachings. May we continually seek to strengthen our relationship with You and strive to live lives that are pleasing to You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

So, are we ready, dear friends? Are we ready to grow, to learn, and to persevere? Are we ready to embrace the fullness of a life lived in Christ? I believe we are. And so, let us begin.

Pursuing Progress in our Spiritual Journey

God’s Word is transformative. This transformation is not a sudden, dramatic shift, but a gradual, continuous process. It's akin to a seed that, when planted in fertile soil and nurtured with care, grows into a strong, sturdy tree. This growth, this transformation, is what we are called to pursue in our spiritual walk with Christ.

The Scriptures remind us of this call in 2 Peter 3:18, where we are urged to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." This growth, dear friends, is not merely about acquiring knowledge. It's about allowing this knowledge to permeate our hearts and minds, to shape our thoughts, words, and actions, and to guide us in our daily lives. It's about growing in grace, in the love and mercy of Christ, and allowing this growth to reflect in our interactions with others.

Colossians 1:9-10 encourages us to continually seek God's will and to strive to live a life worthy of the Lord. This requires active engagement, a conscious effort to understand God's will and to align our lives with His teachings. It requires us to bear fruit in every good work, to live lives that are pleasing to God, and to grow in our knowledge of Him.

In 1 Peter 2:2, we are commanded to crave pure spiritual milk, to seek nourishment for our souls, just as newborn babies crave milk for their physical growth. This yearning for spiritual nourishment is a communal experience. It's about coming together as a community of believers, learning from each other, supporting each other, and growing together in our faith.

Yet, in our pursuit of spiritual progress, we must also be mindful of the challenges that we may encounter. The path to spiritual growth is not always smooth. There may be obstacles, trials, and tribulations. But, dear friends, let us not be disheartened. For these challenges are not meant to deter us, but to strengthen us. They are opportunities for us to demonstrate our faith, to practice perseverance, and to grow in our relationship with Christ.
