To explore the concept of spiritual gifts, their origin, and their significance in our lives and the lives of others, emphasizing the need for recognizing and utilizing these gifts for God's glory and the common good.

Introduction

Good morning, family. Today we are diving into a topic that is of great importance to our walk of faith - spiritual gifts. We will explore what these gifts are, how they are birthed in us, and the profound power they hold in our lives and the lives of others.

Billy Graham once said, "The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, 'O God, forgive me,' or 'Help me.'" It's in these moments of deep prayer and connection with God that our spiritual gifts can be birthed and nurtured.

Understanding Spiritual Gifts

Understanding spiritual gifts begins with recognizing that these are not natural talents or skills, but rather special abilities given by the Holy Spirit to believers in Christ for the purpose of building up the body of Christ, which is the Church. These gifts are divine endowments that are bestowed upon us when we accept Christ as our Savior. They are not earned or deserved, but are given freely out of God's grace and love for us.

The scripture from 1 Corinthians 12:1-10 that we read earlier gives us a glimpse of the variety of spiritual gifts that exist. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, emphasizes that while there are different kinds of gifts, they all come from the same Spirit. This means that no gift is superior to another, and no believer is superior to another because of their spiritual gift. Each gift is equally valuable and necessary for the functioning of the Church.

A. The first step in understanding spiritual gifts is to realize that they are given for the common good. This means that they are not for personal gain or glory, but for the benefit of others. They are meant to be used in service to others, to meet their needs, and to help them grow in their faith. This is a crucial point because it helps us to keep our focus on God and others, rather than on ourselves.

B. Another important aspect of understanding spiritual gifts is recognizing that they are dynamic. They can grow and develop as we mature in our faith and as we use them in service to others. Just as a muscle grows stronger with use, so our spiritual gifts can become more potent as we exercise them. This is why it's important to not only identify our spiritual gifts, but to also put them into action.

C. Understanding spiritual gifts also involves recognizing that we may not all have the same gift. In fact, the diversity of spiritual gifts is a reflection of the diversity of the body of Christ. Just as a body has many different parts, each with its own function, so the Church has many different members, each with their own spiritual gift. This diversity is not a cause for division, but rather a cause for unity, as each member uses their gift to contribute to the overall health and functioning of the body.

D. Finally, understanding spiritual gifts requires us to be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit not only gives the gifts, but also directs us in how to use them. As we seek to understand our spiritual gifts, we need to be in constant prayer and communion with the Spirit, asking for wisdom and guidance.
