SPEAKING LIFE AND TRUTH
Proverbs 12:13-21
Introduction:
Today, we're focusing on an important mission: using our words to bring hope and honesty into a World that really needs it. Proverbs 12:13-21 reminds us that what we say has real power- Either to uplift others or to tear them down. It's a reminder that our speech isn’t just words; it’s a tool that can make a difference in people’s lives, especially in a time when truth and hope are more important than ever.
As followers of Christ, it’s our responsibility to be intentional about speaking life and truth every day. This means choosing words that encourage, build up, and reflect God's love, even when it’s challenging. By doing so, we can be a light in our communities and offer a genuine source of hope in a broken world.
Proverbs 12:13-14
You speak life and truth by…
1. Encouraging, not ensnaring.
You have the power to speak life and truth by being intentional with your words. Instead of tearing others down or spreading negativity, choose to uplift, encourage, and bring clarity- Reflecting the love of Christ in what you say. Your words can either trap or free, so it’s important to be mindful and intentional, using language that inspires hope rather than despair.
In today’s World, especially on social media where negativity can easily spread, you can stand out as a beacon of hope. Remember the saying, “A soft answer turns away wrath.” By speaking with kindness and calmness, you can bring peace into chaotic situations and be a positive influence. Your words have the power to change the atmosphere and bring comfort even in difficult times.
Proverbs 12:15-19
You speak life and truth by…
2. Refusing lies and standing firm on God's eternal Word.
Speaking life and truth means choosing honesty over deception, especially in a World overwhelmed with misinformation. When you stay committed to telling the truth, you're reflecting God's unchanging and everlasting character- Someone who is always real and genuine. It’s about being someone people can trust, standing firm in what’s right, and not getting caught up in spreading rumors or lies that can harm others.
Remember Einstein’s words- “Truth is the most valuable thing we have. Let us not betray it.” Instead of stirring up drama or becoming a “pot-stirrer,” aim to be a “truth-teller” who stands on integrity. In a time when misinformation runs rampant, your honesty can be a beacon of light, showing others the importance of living and speaking with authenticity and respect.
Proverbs 12:20-21

3. Promoting peace and avoiding harmful speech that causes harm.
Your words carry the power to either cause conflict or build bridges. By intentionally speaking life, truth, and encouragement, you can promote reconciliation, healing, and hope in a World that desperately needs peace. Choosing to be a peacemaker means reflecting the love and compassion of Jesus’ ministry, especially during times of social division. Your voice can serve as a healing balm, guiding others toward grace and truth, and ultimately leading them closer to Christ.
In moments of chaos and disagreement, remember that your words have immense power. As Maya Angelou famously said, “Words are things. I’m convinced that words are powerful. Things do not have power by themselves, but because we empower them.” When you speak with grace and intention, you give life to hope and foster unity. Your voice can be a catalyst for reconciliation, helping others see the possibility of peace and connection in a fractured world.
Conclusion:
It is important that we’re mindful of what we say. Our words have real power- They can either lift people up or tear them down. When we choose to speak with kindness, stand up for what’s right, and share hope through Christ, we’re making a difference not just in the moment, but for eternity.
Remember, what we say matters a lot more than we often realize. Our words carry eternal weight, so let’s be intentional about speaking life and truth wherever we go. With God’s help, we can be sources of hope and encouragement in a World that desperately needs it. Let’s speak words that reflect His love and make a lasting impact.
