Youth Sermon: Speaking & Boasting

The Power of Words

James kicks off by saying that teachers and preachers are gonna be judged more strictly because their words carry a lot of weight. Our words can make a huge difference, and if we can get a handle on what we say, we can control our whole selves.

Imagine this: You're playing a video game, and you're down to the last boss. You've got one tiny health potion left. That small potion can either make or break your game. It's the same with our words. They might seem small, but they can make a big difference.

Our words can make a huge difference, and if we can get a handle on what we say, we can control our whole selves.

The Contradiction of Our Words

James points out how crazy it is that we use our words to praise God one minute and diss others the next. That's not cool. Our words should show the new life we have in Jesus, not the old habits we're trying to ditch.

James tells us to be humble, chill, and kind. We shouldn't be bad-mouthing each other or judging our friends. Only God can do that, and we should leave the judging to Him.

The Future is in God's Hands

James also warns us about bragging and acting like we're all that. We often talk like we've got the future all figured out, but really, we're like a Snapchat that's here one second and gone the next. We gotta remember that our plans are in God's hands.

The Challenge

This week, let's try a challenge. Every time you're about to say something negative, try flipping it into something positive. Instead of saying, "I hate math," try saying, "Math is challenging, but I'm getting better." Let's see how this small change can make a big difference.

Prayer

Let's pray together. God, help us to use our words wisely this week. Help us to build up, not tear down. And remind us that our words have power. Amen.
