Summary: If you drive a car you find out fast that you have to put gasoline in every couple of days.

Title: Soul Fuel

Text: Habakkuk 2:4-5

Introduction: If you drive a car you find out fast that you have to put gasoline in every couple of days.

If you have ever accidentally put in diesel fuel you know that your car doesn’t run well, and eventually stops all together

The goal of my sermon today is for us to understand that even if our soul is filled, if it not filled with faith, then it is truly malnourished.

I. The soul which is lifted up is not upright

A. The soul may be filled, but it is filled with the wrong things

B. We have found a replacement for faith that does not measure up

C. We keep working to make that which we have chosen to substitute for faith measure up to it, and it never will

II. Our pride keeps us working

A. Our pride helps us fill that void that is brought by lack of faith

B. Our pride actually keeps him away from what is important such as faith and family, because we feel we have not the time for such things

C. Our feeling of self-importance superficially fills our empty soul

D. The scripture says in verse 5 “…but gathereth unto him all nations and heapeth unto him all people” or ‘he uses his power and influence over people to fuel his proud spirit, and try to keep his soul puffed up’

III. Our greed is never satisfied

A. We try to use material gain to satisfy the void in his soul

B. The scripture says in verse 5 “…who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied…” or ‘he is as greedy as death itself, and will never be satisfied’

C. Think about how greedy death is. It must consume everyone. Never does death say, “I have had enough” or “I need no more”.

IV. The righteous shall live by faith

A. The only true way to fill a void in the soul is through faith in God and his son Jesus Christ

B. John 3:36 says “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not on the son shall not see life: but the wrath of God abideth on him”

C. When you receive Jesus, completeness will finally enter your soul. You will no longer need these other things to try to fill a void, because there will not be one!

Conclusion:

We should always realize that anything we try to fill ourselves with, that is not faith in our God through Jesus, will always come up short.

Money, Power and material things all pale in comparison to faith in a God who loves and keeps us

The question you have to ask yourself is simple:

“is your soul filled with the Holy Spirit?” and if not “Why Not?”
