A. We don't get entangled in the enterprises of civilian life
"No soldier when in service gets entangled in the enterprises of [civilian] life;"
Entangled or "empleko" in Greek meaning:
1. to entwine
2. involve with
Affairs or "pragmateia" in Greek meaning:
1. transaction
2. negotiation
3. affair
Life or "bios" in Greek meaning:
1. the present state of existence
2. means of livelihood
3. good, life, living
What does it mean to be entangled in the civilian affairs of this life? How can we know if we reach that point and are already entangled?
1. You have deserted a man of GOD in exchange for love of this present world
2 Timothy 4:10 (Amplified Bible)
4:10 For Demas has deserted me for love of this present world and has gone to Thessalonica; Crescens [has gone] to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
2. You are choked, suffocated, with the anxieties, cares, riches and pleasures of life, your fruit does not ripen
Luke 8:14 (Amplified Bible)
8:14 And as for what fell among the thorns, these are [the people] who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked and suffocated with the anxieties and cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not ripen (come to maturity and perfection).
3. You no longer restrict yourself in all things. You run uncertainly. You box without striking an adversary.
1 Corinthians 9:25-26 (Amplified Bible)
9:25 Now every athlete who goes into training conducts himself temperately and restricts himself in all things. They do it to win a wreath that will soon wither, but we [do it to receive a crown of eternal blessedness] that cannot wither.
9:26 Therefore I do not run uncertainly (without definite aim). I do not box like one beating the air and striking without an adversary.
4. You want to be rich physically, you love money. You no longer pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness of heart
1 Timothy 6:9-12 (Amplified Bible)
6:9 But those who crave to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish (useless, godless) and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction and miserable perishing.
6:10 For the love of money is a root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have been led astray and have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves through with many acute [mental] pangs.
6:11 But as for you, O man of God, flee from all these things; aim at and pursue righteousness (right standing with God and true goodness), godliness (which is the loving fear of God and being Christlike), faith, love, steadfastness (patience), and gentleness of heart.
6:12 Fight the good fight of the faith; lay hold of the eternal life to which you were summoned and [for which] you confessed the good confession [of faith] before many witnesses.
5. You are overcome with the pollutions of the world, entangled in them.
2 Peter 2:20 (Amplified Bible)
2:20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through [the full, personal] knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they again become entangled in them and are overcome, their last condition is worse [for them] than the first.
B. Our aim is to satisfy and please CHRIST
"his aim is to satisfy and please the one who enlisted him"
Still our aim in this life is to satisfy and please the LORD JESUS CHRIST. That is our work and profession here on earth: to give praise, worship and thanksgiving to our LORD JESUS CHRIST by giving Him an honor as our MASTER, LORD and SAVIOR. If this is no longer your aim, then return back, you still have hope if you're still alive and are reading this.
