Series: Biblical Cities- Sodom [#2]

SODOM- WORTH FIGHTING FOR?

Genesis 10:19

Introduction:

We are continuing in our Series about some of the most mentioned Cities in the Bible. Tonight, we are going to continue studying the city that is 4th on the list- Sodom. Sodom is mentioned 48 times in the Bible.

Genesis 10:19

As we studied last week, Sodom was an evil place. They sinned against the Lord. So, at what point should we be willing to battle for people of a terrible city?

Genesis 14:8-16

Was this battle worth fighting? Yes, it was. I want us to apply 3 principles to this situation and see why this battle was worth fighting.

1. Consider the cost.

We can’t just let evil run rampant and unopposed. We are in a spiritual battle, and we cannot just let Satan do his thing as we just stand around and let him do it.

These are some things worth fighting for:

* Physical life.

Physical life is worth fighting for. Abortionist are servants of the enemy and are taking more life than any other evil you can think of. God told Abram when and where to walk.

* Spiritual life.

How we handle Satan’s attack has great implications in how lives are touched either for God or for Satan. Are you going to allow the enemy to come in and take your family and all that is yours away?

* God’s reputation.

Your reputation means nothing, but we should never forget that we are soldiers of the King. We are soldiers of God, and we need to be ready for war. Abram had been training these 318 men since they were little boys and when it was time to use their training, they were ready.

2. Consider your opponent.

The devil and all that he does need to be destroyed. Although we know that he will be destroyed completely in the end; we can destroy what he is trying to do to us and God’s Army.

This enemy needs to learn that he can’t…

* Mess with God’s people and get away with it.

* Take anything from us that we won’t let him have.

How much of Abram’s family and possessions did he get back? All of them and all of the possessions. We need to take back what the devil has taken from us.

3. Consider your Leader.

Abram knew God was watching over him and that God had provided him with the necessary people and tools to win the battle. Understand that the battle belongs to the Lord. That means that even your little conflicts belong to the Lord, and it is not your place to go to battle without His sending you. You need to also consider that God will not send you into a particular battle until He has prepared you. Sometimes, your part is just to be obedient- Like Joshua at Jericho. As a soldier of God, He is teaching and training you up for battle and has been trying to do so since your new birth. Are you trainable? Are you in training? Are you ready for battle?

Conclusion:

Genesis 14:17-20

After the victory, Abram worshiped God. Melchizedek was Priest and King. This is very significant because Jesus is from the line of Melchizedek. Part of his worship was that he gave a 10th of everything.

Genesis 14:21-24

Abram did not want to do anything that would hurt his witness. Taking the plunder would have caused Abram to break his oath with God and rob God of the victory. We don’t need what the world has to offer. What we need to be victorious is God.
