Sin, Suffering, and Sleep.
Job 14:1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
I. Sin thoughts or behavior which are contrary to the glory or character
of God, to commit an offence against God's laws
Ps 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother
conceive me.
How should we handle sin? confess it to God
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive
us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
How do we fight against sin? with the word of God
Ps 119:9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking
heed thereto according to thy word. 10 With my whole heart
have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy
commandments. 11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that
I might not sin against thee.
How do we not sin? we don't have to sin
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that
the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should
not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Rom 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin;
but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
1 Cor 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is
common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer
you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the
temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able
to bear it.
II. Suffering to endure pain, distress, or death
James 5:10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the
name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction,
and of patience. 11 Behold, we count them happy
which endure.
James 1:3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be
perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
Ps 34:10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that
seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.
1 Peter 4:16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be
ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
you want to know how to handle suffering, just look at Paul
2 Cor 12:7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the
abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a
thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest
I should be exalted above measure. 8 For this thing I
besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. 9 And
he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is
made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory
in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10
Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities,
in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak,
then am I strong.
Paul said in 2 Cor 11:23 in labours more abundant, in stripes above
measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. 24 Of the Jews
five times received I forty stripes save one. 25 Thrice was I beaten
with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night
and a day I have been in the deep; 26 In journeyings often, in perils
of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in
perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness,
in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; 27 In weariness
and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings
often, in cold and nakedness. 28 Beside those things that are without,
that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches. 29
Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not? 30
If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine
infirmities.
III. Sleep (death)
John 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them,
Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him
out of sleep. 12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he
shall do well. 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they
thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. 14 Then
said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after
this the judgment:
Eccl 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might;
