Sin No More

June 4, 2023

1 John 3:4-9 NIV

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. 7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

Sin is life without boundaries.

v. 4 - Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

How do we know right from wrong?

Who can tell us no?

Should there be rules and laws?

Who gets to make these rules and laws?

Sin is ignoring Jesus.

v. 6 – No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

People who ignore, marginalize, and demonize the standards of Jesus will become violent, perverse and corrupt.

Sin has a father.

v. 8a – The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning.

Genesis 3:1-5 NIV

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Jesus is the cure for sin.

There’s no incurable sin.

There’s not one sin that Christ has not overcome!!

v.8b-9 – The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

All his works have been destroyed.

All his tricks have been exposed.

Romans 6:23 NIV

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Sin doesn’t have to be terminal.

“God’s seed” is parental language.

When Jesus is Lord in our lives, we become members of his family.

We began to have his traits, his character, and his convictions.

Hebrews 4:15-16 NIV

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
