Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Explore and understand the biblical prophecies about signs in the sky and the end times, emphasizing the need for vigilance and faith in God's plan.
Hey church family, we're diving into some heavy stuff today, y'all. We're going to be looking at the signs in the sky, the significance of these signs and the fulfillment of prophecy. We're talking about the stuff that's been written about for centuries and is still talked about today. There's a sense of mystery and wonder, but also a bit of fear, right?
As Samuel Wigglesworth once said, "People do not expect to see signs and wonders today as the disciples saw them of old. Has God changed? Or has our faith waned so that we are not expecting the greater works that Jesus promised?" We're going to be looking at Luke 21:24-25, Joel 2:30-31, and Matthew 24:29-47.
These are powerful and profound words. So, let's pray.
Heavenly Father, as we venture into these passages today, we ask that You guide us. Help us to understand the significance of these signs and prophecies. Open our hearts and minds to Your message, and give us the courage to live in the light of Your coming kingdom. Amen.
Let’s get started!
The signs in the sky are a recurring theme in the Bible, particularly in prophetic literature. They are often used to signify important events, changes, or the fulfillment of prophecies. These signs are not just random occurrences or natural phenomena, but they are divinely orchestrated and hold significant meaning. They serve as a divine communication tool, a way for God to speak to His people and to the world.
Luke 21:24-25: Jesus speaks of signs in the sun, moon, and stars. These celestial events are not just for show, but they are indicators of something much bigger. They are signs of the end times, of the fulfillment of God's plan for humanity. The sun, moon, and stars have always been used as markers of time and seasons, and here, they are used to mark a significant time in God's plan.
Joel 2:30-31: The sun, moon, and stars are also used here. Here, the prophet Joel speaks of the sun turning to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the "great and dreadful day of the Lord." These signs are not just physical phenomena, but they are symbolic of the spiritual darkness that will come before the Lord's return. The sun turning to darkness could be symbolic of the spiritual darkness that will envelop the world, while the moon turning to blood could symbolize the bloodshed and violence that will occur.
Matthew 24:29-47: Jesus speaks again of these signs. He says that the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky. These are not just physical phenomena, but they are symbolic of the upheaval and chaos that will occur before the Lord's return. The sun being darkened and the moon not giving its light could symbolize the spiritual darkness that will envelop the world, while the stars falling from the sky could symbolize the upheaval and chaos that will occur.
What’s the point?: These signs in the sky are not just meant to scare us or to cause fear, but they are meant to prepare us. They are meant to remind us of the urgency of the times and the need to be ready for the Lord's return. They are meant to stir us to action, to encourage us to live in the light of God's coming kingdom.
