Matthew 27:45-46-Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Verse 45-The significance of the darkness:

To show forth the exceeding great blindness of the people!

Matthew 8:12,-"And the children of the Kingdom shall be cast out, INTO OUTER DARKNESS: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Exodus 10:21-"And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.

Verse 46-Jesus has been hanging now six hours upon the tree, and He

has not once so much as thought about Himself, He has interceded for

His tortures. He has comforted the thief in his agony, and promised

him a reward for his faith. He has looked with loving eyes upon His

mother, as she stood overwhelmed with sorrow beneath the cross and

has given her the consolation that she needed, and now the darkness

has come and He pours out the sorrow of His own soul.

Jesus was given comfort in the darker moments of His life, such as, the 40 days in the wilderness, or in the garden.

But now the weight of the sins of the world was upon His shoulders and He had to bear it alone!

In dying on the cross, “Christ was not spared until He had endured all that sin must entail, and the last dread result of sin is to shut man out from the presence of God!”

His human side cries out, the one who thirst, the one who gets tired, the one

who gets hungry, He never felt this separation from God, the Father!

The Lord was deserted that we might not be deserted!

If He was a God who didn’t feel pain or go through temptation, what good

would that do me?

THE LESSON:

There is nothing that you can suffer or go thru that Christ cannot identify with!

Ever felt forsaken? Ever felt alone? Ever been betrayed? Ever been persecuted?

Ever been rejected? Ever been physically abused? Ever been emotionally abused?

Ever been verbally abused? Ever been rejected? Ever had your friends abandoned you in your hour of need? Ever been falsely accused? Ever been falsely judge?

That is why when you go thru these things you can know He understands!

Hebrews 4:15-For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Isaiah 53:5-But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,

And by His stripes we are healed.
