Message Point: We have been set free from the penalty of our sins.

Focus Passage: Romans 8:1-8

Supplemental Passage: 2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Introduction:

On November 4, 1979, Iranian militants stormed the United States Embassy in Tehran and took approximately seventy Americans captive. This terrorist act triggered the most profound crisis of the Carter presidency and began a personal ordeal for the American people that lasted 444 days.

I. Condemned Captives

a. Condemned by God for sin

II. Rescued & Redeemed

a. 2 Cor. 5:21 (Story of Eric Liddell, Most of us only think about Eric Liddell as ‘the man who wouldn’t run on Sunday’, for whom about the movie “Chariots of Fire” was made. After his running career, he served as a missionary to Shandong Province, China. He was captured during WWII by the Japanese and held in a prison camp in Weifeng, China. In a prisoner exchange bargain, his freedom was arranged by Winston Churchill, but he gave it up and let a pregnant woman leave instead. He died just five months before the camp’s liberation. )
