Good morning, family! Today, we're going to dive into the heart of what it means to follow Jesus by looking at the example He set for us in serving others. Our main focus will be on Mark 10:45, but we'll also be exploring the call to serve others and the rewards that come with it.
To kick things off, I'd like to share a quote from Max Lucado, who said, "God doesn't call the equipped; He equips the called." When we respond to God's call to serve, He will provide everything we need to live out that calling.
Now let's read the Scripture passage from Mark 10:45, which says,
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."
Jesus, the Son of God Himself, came to this earth not to be served, but to serve others and ultimately give His life for us. If that's not the ultimate example of selfless service, I don't know what is!
Before we dive deeper into this topic, let's open with a word of prayer.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the perfect example of Your Son, Jesus, who showed us what it means to serve others. Help us to follow in His footsteps and be ever mindful of the needs of those around us. Equip us, Lord, to serve others with love, humility, and compassion. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
So, let's get started!
When we look at the life of Jesus, we see a man who was fully God and fully human, yet He chose to live a life of service to others.
One of the most striking aspects of Jesus' example of serving others is the way in which He consistently put the needs of others before His own. Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and even washing the feet of His disciples. In each of these instances, Jesus demonstrates a willingness to set aside His own comfort and well-being in order to meet the needs of those around Him. This selflessness is a powerful reminder of the kind of love that God has for each of us and serves as a model for how we should approach our relationships with others.
Another aspect of Jesus' example of serving others is the way in which He valued and honored each person He encountered, regardless of their social status or background. In a time when society was deeply divided along lines of race, gender, and social class, Jesus consistently broke down these barriers by treating each person He met with dignity and respect. Whether it was a Samaritan woman at the well, a tax collector named Zacchaeus, or a group of lepers seeking healing, Jesus demonstrated that every person has inherent worth and is deserving of love and care.
In addition to valuing and honoring each person He encountered, Jesus also demonstrated a deep sense of empathy and compassion for those who were suffering. Time and time again, we see Jesus moved with compassion for the crowds who were like "sheep without a shepherd" (Mark 6:34), for the widow who had lost her only son (Luke 7:13), and for the sick and the demon-possessed (Matthew 14:14). This empathy and compassion drove Jesus to action, as He sought to alleviate the suffering of those around Him through healing, teaching, and ultimately, through His sacrificial death on the cross.
Jesus' example of serving others also extended to the way in which He invested in the lives of His disciples. Rather than simply imparting knowledge or issuing commands, Jesus walked alongside His disciples, teaching them through His words and actions what it meant to live a life of service and devotion to God. In doing so, Jesus demonstrated the importance of investing in the lives of others and helping them grow in their faith and understanding of God's love.
Furthermore, Jesus' example of serving others was marked by a sense of humility that is truly remarkable, given His divine nature and status as the Son of God. In Philippians 2:5-8, the Apostle Paul writes, "In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!" This passage highlights the incredible humility of Jesus, who willingly set aside His divine privileges in order to serve others and ultimately give His life as a ransom for many.
As we reflect on Jesus' example of serving others, it's important to recognize that this is not simply a nice idea or an optional aspect of the Christian life. Rather, Jesus' example of service is a call to action for each of us, as we seek to follow in His footsteps and live lives that are marked by selflessness, humility, and love.
