The second church Jesus instructed John to pen a letter was the church in Smyrna. It was situated within a city of great wealth and affluence, and yet many believers lived in poverty. They were not rich by the world's standards, but they were rich in grace.

Pergamos was a prominent city, but there was much idolatry and immorality there. Some of the believers had remained faithful, but others had compromised their stand for the Lord. Jesus admonished them to abide faithful.

Sometimes we should rejoice in the death of a church rather than mourn. After a long painful disease, we express relief when a person passes into Glory. Many churches suffer a slow and painful death. Out of that death life and renewal may come.

Thyatira: Corrupted By Compromise

Although situated within the smallest of the seven cities, the church in Thyatira received the longest letter. They were faithful in their labor, but had compromised with false doctrine. Jesus challenged them regarding the toleration of false teaching.

Sardis: Socially Active But Spiritually Dead

Sardis was the fifth church Jesus addressed in the Revelation. While the letter was shorter than the others, this one was the most severe. Apparently, Sardis has assimilated into the culture - with little difference known between the church and the world.

Like Smyrna, the Lord offered only encouragement for Philadelphia, with no rebuke. They were a people of little strength, and yet they held great potential. Christ promised to open doors no man could close. He reminded them of His preeminence and the security of their future.
