  • Rest For Today And Forever

Contributed by Christopher Martin on Mar 15, 2008
    based on 1 rating

I preached this at my grandmother’s funeral. She was 88 and althogh her health had been declining, her death was very sudden. Her last request of me was to officiate at her funeral, which I did and was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my ministry.

(Reading of the obituary) I think it’s pretty safe to say that this day came as a great shock to almost every one of us in this room here today. While we knew that Grandma wasn’t in the best of health, and had some past health issues a little over 4 years ago, none of us thought that we’d be ...read more

A funeral sermon for an 85 year old woman who had passed away due to a blood disorder, and had gradually lost a lot of her memory in her last month. I was at her bedside when she was called home, and her last moments served as a powerful witness to mysel

Some of you as you arrived here this morning may have already noticed the two hymns that were chosen for the congregation to sing are “Softly and Tenderly” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.” Although they appear in our newer hymnbook, With One Voice, they’re actually pretty old, familiar hymns. ...read more

  • A Different Kind Of Hope

Contributed by Joseph Smith on Mar 18, 2008
    based on 5 ratings

Funeral sermon for Andrea Pitts, who had instructed this preacher a few days before her death about the ways in which she felt hope.

The message this morning is not just about Andrea Pitts. It comes from Andrea Pitts. I bring no eulogy, but rather a report, a report that proclaims the truth of Christ in the midst of suffering from the very lips of a woman who embraced her death and lived her hope. The words today are not so ...read more

  • The End Of Death

    based on 4 ratings

This sermon is my first funeral sermon in the learning process. It is about the death of Christ bringing about an end to the fear of death.

The End of Death There is a fear that is imbedded in our human nature. It exists regardless of wealth, culture, or ethnicity. It is the fear is fear driven by the unknown. It is the fear of death. It is a spiritual fear. One that consumes our minds with thoughts of what ifs. It causes us ...read more

  • To Desire A Better Country

Contributed by Joseph Smith on Jan 23, 2008
    based on 4 ratings

Funeral service for Anne Tlholakae, diplomat of the Embassy of South Africa. All of us desire a better country; that journey begins with faith. As Biblical wanderers sought that better country but died in a foreign land, so Anne sought and found Christ

The desire for a better country goes deep in the human heart. The desire for something more, something finer, than what our ancestors left us is an aspiration that transcends all boundaries. Just as here in the United States we celebrate those markers in our history that made us a greater nation, ...read more

Charles was a believer in Christ whom I had the privilege of watching growing in Christ from a very worldly perspective to a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Charles Marcus What would you do, if you had one week left to live? You would probably begin to realize what is really important in your life? You’d realize that some of things you’re dying to have really do not matter that much in the long run. Death ...read more

  • Keeping The Doorkeeper

Contributed by Joseph Smith on Jan 26, 2008
    based on 6 ratings

Funeral for Guy Robinson, one-time chair of Takoma Park Baptist Church’s Building and Grounds Committee. God keeps the doorkeeper secure, and withholds no good thing from those who stay away from dishonesty.

I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. Eight plus one equals nine, subtract nine, leaves zero. That is the first thing Guy Robinson taught me, more than 23 years ago. It was the first thing, but by no means the last. Guy was at the time I ...read more

Using Jesus’ Good Shepherd narrative, I’ve written a sermon for the death of a pastor.

Funeral service for a believer; plan of salvation for those in attendance. (Name removed out of respect and replaced with gender specific title.)

I believe that this servant of the Lord would want to let others have an opportunity to know this Savior of hers, and the simplest way to do that is to share with you some of her favorite bible verses, also known as “The Romans Road”. Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the ...read more
